Some help with a new keyboard, please. $400+
« on: Mon, 12 March 2012, 20:01:39 »
Hi!

After finally finding the perfect mouse, mousepad, monitor and headphones, I'm now trying to finish my setup with a high quality keyboard that I can hopefully enjoy more than my previous ones. Seeing as how I've already got a Steelseries 7G (mx black) and a Ducky Shine (mx brown), I would like to try one with blues next (or whatever the other switches are called that are similar to them). I have 400+ $'s available give or take. I live in Europe, Sweden, so if anybody has any suggestions please also link a store where it's available for me to order from and have it shipped here. thanks.

*Numpad is not needed or wanted. Can live with it, but I'd rather not. :peep:
*Backlit is also not a necessity, but it would be a plus as long as the overall quality doesn't take a hit.
*I'd prefer if it uses PS/2 and with a USB adapter instead of the other way around as my Silverstone case is very problematic when it comes to adapter lenghts (I'd rather use ps/2 alone). So I'd like one similar to steelseries 7g instead of what Ducky has.
*A bonus would be if there's a nice wrist-rest from the same company such as ducky keyboard + ducky wrist-rest. Or at least a random one that matches the keyboard to some extent!

If the keyboard doesn't have blank/front printed keycaps, please recommend me a site where I could pick up a quality set from if possible. Not sure about colours as it'll depend on the keyboard. Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
C.C.

Thanks for the welcome and the links! :llama:

Heh, I found one store in our country that sells the CM keyboard, but they simply chose to leave out the information of the switch colour... :mad2:

Was looking into Filco and HHKB as well, so much to pick from... :violin:

You could see if you could get a Phantom from someone for $400, although that might be on the low-side...

The CM board is listed with the model number "SGK-4000-GKCC1-ND" at komplett.se, which is MX Black switches according to CM Storm's website. =)

I bought a tenkeyless Filco with blues not that long ago from KeyboardCo, with a set of blank keycaps, and I'm really content with it! But yeah, the HHKB is a really tempting board. I think I'd have bought that instead if I hadn't had my mind set at trying a clicky board at the time, lol.

I'd say buy the HHKB if you think the noise of the blues might be too loud! But maybe I'm just saying this because I prefer browns over blues, who knows?

I see you've tried blacks and browns.  Ever tried Topre?  I ask not because you must spend the $400 you have, but $400 does give you budget for a Realforce 87U if that's your thing.  The catch is that it may not be your thing.  On top of that, there's choices to be made - silent, normal, variable, 45g, 55g.

I suppose it would be ideal to see if you could find a Realforce, ANY Realforce, in buy and sell and give it a try.  Then you'll have an idea if the feel is for you and go out and get your "dream board".  You will spend less out of pocket this way and still discover whether you like them or not.

Personally, I found that although I loved the feel of the 55g Realforce switches in theory, they did not work out for me in the long term.  My speed suffered and there was a certain degree of fatigue.  I've since picked up a variable 86U which I've been using for just over a week and this works much better for me in a work environment (no gaming whatsoever).  I also have a couple of MX brown boards, a Model M and a compact board with some kind of ALPs switch.  I always use MX browns at home, and I'm in the process of moving from the Model M to either the 86U or another MX Brown board.  I'm giving the Realforce a good test drive in order to form my opinion.  The touch is very, very different between MX browns and Realforce.

Don't feel the need to spend $400 just because you have $400.  I'm not sure why you'd prefer to use PS2.  USB is nice and clean, supports at least 6KRO on most good boards, allows you to use hubs, boards like the Leopold have detachable cables so you can order a cable of exactly the right length for your installation from somewhere like Monoprice, USB is hot pluggable etc...etc...  I think there's hype in some less-informed forums about the superiority of PS2.  It's true that you can get true NKRO but I haven't really had a problem with 6KRO - maybe you would, I don't know.

Bah, thanks for the info on the komplett keyboard!

Can't find any black version of the HHKB pro2, so that's somewhat depressing! Ugly grey : (

Guess I'm still stuck between Filco blues and HHKB then.

Heh, wasn't exactly all 'there' when I wrote the USB/PS/2 thing. Essentially needs to be either a pure USB or PS/2, so that I don't have to use any adapter to get the most out of the keyboard due to my oddly shaped case. And ye, I won't throw money away just because!

Apparently CM have released only MX Black in Europe so far, because they want to "test the waters" and see if it sells.
Which store did you see it in and what was the price?

KeyboardCo sells blank black key caps for Filco Majestouch. WASD Keyboards sells blank key caps in eight different colours for Cherry MX boards. Both sell in both ANSI and ISO layout and both have vendor forums on this board.

BTW, welcome to Geekhack! You are the 28th Swedish guy that I have spotted here (including myself), and according to the time of your post, quite a nightowl. :) Where in Sweden are you from?

What are your perfect headphones, monitor, mouse and mouse pad?

Sennheiser HD650, BenQ TFT 24'' XL2420T 120Hz, EpicGear Meduza and XFX WarPad. Took some long time to find the right mouse, but this is by far the most comfortable one I've ever used, and I have about 20 mice in my apartment, including razer's latest garbage naga hex. Unlike the Razer mice which has dual sensor (there's a few), you can run it as only optical or only laser, or combine both. Doesn't use the best sensors in the world, but it feels like im holding a baby seal when gaming. Same deal with the WarPad, easy to clean and most importantly feels great to rest your arm on. But the steelseries Qck+ are also great mousepads and I use the Tyloo version from time to time. Monitor selection was easy, it's the best price/performance 120hz at this moment. I also found these headphones perfect and definitely a great upgrade from 598's, at least for me.

new mouse - tt esports saphira looks very interesting as well. bah, must resist buying yet another mouse... but..but... it's sensor seems excellent...

perfect setup.... 1 24" monitor? lol

it's either 3 displays or bust bro

actually even 2 monitors will suffice (like what I have) but I can't for the life of me work with 1 monitor comfortably :P

I dont know your mouse, i think they released it after i bought mine like 6 months ago.
Did you try the Mionix Naos? Funny i think the company is swedish.

BTW with your budget i'd buy TWO keyboards and resell the one you like less. A Topre and a Filco with either blues or browns would be my advice.

Heh, get a CST L-TracX for your perfect "mouse".   The coolest of the pointing devices, and the least respected.

More info in this thread.

You may want to try a Topre Realforce 87U for a numpadless model within your price range.  HHKB is a gimmick, and really outrageously priced to boot, with several reviews on here saying it's of lower build quality than Topre's own models.  Both keyboards use Topre switches anyway.  I'll give you more of an informed opinion when my Realforce arrives.
