Doubletapping question and buying advice needed
« on: Tue, 13 March 2012, 08:31:59 »
Hi there!
I'm new to this forum and very glad that I found it because u can surely help me out with my problem.

Since a few months I'm think of getting a new keyboard and I'm very undecided what to buy. Now I use a Speedlink Ultraflat keyboard with scissor keys (liked the very short key travel and the Actuation Force and the  tactile feedback) which I used for about 8 years now. I loved the keyboard but it annoys me with every day more and more because I can feel how used it is and the key press feel is very very hard.

I was thinking of a cherry g80-3000 (black or brown) or a buckling spring unicomp keyboard.(or maybe also a topre keyboard but this is way too expensive I think...)
Because I work as a programmer I use my keyboard much for typing but I also play lots of fps (CS) and also some rts games like SC2.

My Problem is I can't test any of the key types in real life because in Vienna there is no store which has them issued except the Razor Black widow Keyboard with mx blues. With the mx blue switch I can't come along because you have to fully release the key if u wana press it again. When you come from a keyboard with scissor keys where the tactile feedback is right to the bottoming out point it annoys u a lot. I also typed on a old model m with bs, but haven't gamed with it, what was a real pleasure and in my opinion the best typing experience I had.

So my question would I have this double tapping problem with the other switches types too especial with the blacks browns or the bs? Personal I tend more to the bs as the cherry switches don't know why.(maybe because I haven't tested blacks and browns...)
Hope I haven't written to wired.

thx in anticipation

I must say I don't quite understand this double tap issue with blues. The thing is compared to RD/scissor switches cherry mx switches activate at the half way mark, whether you think this would cause any kind of trouble is up to you.

Not used buckling springs I believe they are a heavier switch. Mx browns are light and give a little tactile feedback which is nice for typing and sc2. I think browns are a good choice, blues aren't a bad choice and buckling springs are something that may suit you.

I think linear cherries would probably frustrate you as you seem to want tactile feedback.

I've never had any double tapping issues with my blues. The blues also dont have to be released all the way for you to activate it again. Just take a look at the force diagrams in the wiki

first of all ty for the answers.
I also think that browns would fit me well but i found out just a few minutes ago that there is a flat mechanic key switch from cherry.
The cherry G84-5200LCMDE-2 with ML switches. I think would maybe be a better choice for me because i get so used to a flat keyboard.
My only Problem is that the layout is maybe a bit wired at the numbers. There are the numbers in the same row as the letters unter it. At normal keyboards the numbersline starts a half keysize left from the letter keys.
Are there maybe other brands that use this switch and have a 100%layout?

Has someone maybe some experience with the cherry ML switches? Maybe played some fps games with it?

I've played all sorts of games with all but ALPS switches. Blacks are actually my least favorite switch for anything so my opinions differ a good amount from the default logic, just a caveat.

I honestly don't have an issue with blue switches for any gaming. I have a friend who plays high level competitive TF2 on his blackwidow and I play SC2 just fine on my blues (though have recently switched to 45g topre).

For me, browns slightly edge out blues for FPS games and vice versa for SC2 (because the added tactility really helps IMO). Topre is up there of you can get one (think rubber dome done right) but dont sweat it if it's too rich for your blood.

As usual it all boils down to preference and we can only give our opinions and not much more. If blues didn't feel right to you and you love your old RD board I'd probably just recommend either 45g Topre or Cherry browns.

Re: ML switches, afaik most people really don't like them so I've never attempted to try them.

Same idea with ALPS. Some people say they've gotten awesome ALPS blacks but most are really turned off by them. That much of a split opinion has stopped me from wanting to spend real cash just trying something there's a good chance I won't like.

Topre would be a nice keyboard thought but I dont have 250-400$ money on the side to spend for a keyboard. Max would be about 80-100€ that i could spend.
How I just postet in my post up there I'm deciding between the cherry browns and the Cherry ML switches. I think the ML switches would be the most similar switch to my old scissor board because they are also flat and the tactile feedback. But what annoys me is the layout... this 95% don't know layout

Edit: I just read that the ML switches have a problem that when u don't press the key in the middle of it it tilts. Like in this movie
That realy true?

Don't want to save your money up for a Realforce?  You're on a bit of a budget if you want a decent keyboard here and now.

Reds are far better than blacks, but you'll need to get used to a linear switch.  I would second a keyboard with Browns if you're going for a more immediate buy.  It's good to get used to using many different types of switch and many differently-profiled keys.  I honestly don't know how you type on those low-profile boards without feeling like you're pounding your fingers into a wall, for instance.

So after reading the whole night reviews and indentations from users on this forum and the internet i think i found a solution.
I think I will go with a QPAD MK-50 because of the price/Wrist pad/nkro/layout and the fact that i can get it from amazon.at. I'm only asking myself if there are realy some issues like in this thread posted before http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?18231-XArmor-U9BL-S-My-first-mechancial-keyboard-%28with-a-few-bugs%29&p=348943&viewfull=1#post348943 with this keyboard.

I'm still undecided about the switch type.
Reds (think would maybe realy be the best choise because I think I'm going to bottom out anyway maybe I can adjust them then with some o-rings and then i have a shorter key and such as a feedback?) or
Browns (my only problem is that i think i would have this doubletapping issue like with the blues i mentiont in my first post).

Browns (my only problem is that I think I would have this double tapping issue like with the blues I mentioned in my first post because blues and browns are very similar).

Too Typhaeon imho it's too much money to pay for a product u haven't even tested or really know what u will get or if u will really enjoy it so much.

Blues and browns are far from similar.
No switch has doubletapping issues, I have played Starcraft on all type of switches and never had any problem.

Brown are way less tactile than blues.

If you like linear switches, go for red tho.

So I finally got a decision and ordered a keyboard and who would think it arrived after 2 days of shipping.

I got myself a Qpad mk-50 with cherry mx red switches. Actually decided to get a linear switch because I thought I would like it and it would maybe remind me of my childhood when I was playing the piano^^.

sry for bad quality but have only my old mobile phone

Quick review:

I was very excited when I was unboxed the keyboard 2 minutes ago. I just typed a few lines of text and I can say I like linear switches but it's a little crazy to write on it for the first time. Think would take a few days that my fingers get used to them but they really like the switch like a cloud of boobs (loud boobs when u bottom them out ^^).
Second problem is that I  have to get used to the 100% layout of the keyboard because I had a smaller keyboard before. I also write a little slower than on my previous flat keyboard but I think I'll get to normal speed in just a few days.
Will post more Info's when I test the keyboard for a week or so.

What I just can say is that I am very happy having my first mechanical keyboard :). But I'm not 100% pleased still thinking of other mechkeyboards how they would maybe feel.
Think a new addiction has just been born in me.
