Looking for a Cherry MX Brown Keyboard
« on: Tue, 20 March 2012, 20:57:28 »
So after some research, I've concluded that I want a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches. So geekhack, can you recommend me a keyboard?
I was looking at the Leopold "Otaku" keyboards, and I thought that the idea of blank keycaps was cool. However, I heard that the quality on the Leopold keyboards was iffy.

As far as preferred features go, here's my list:
Under $120
Good looking keycaps
Has numpad
Cherry MX Brown

AFAIK, the quality of Leopold TKL is very well built and solid. The only problems with it is some random faulty controller issue(EK stated that around few out of thousands, and they say they offer lifetime controller replacement for it, so I don't see much issues here) and the stiffy Cherry Style Stabiliser(again, it should be some personal preference stuff, some ppl like cherry style while some ppl like Costar style).

EDIT: Just saw that you need a numpad, which mean a fullsize 104 keyboard. Then I can say go ahead for the Leopold as it doesn't has the controller issue and is among the best option for your budget.
Or you can go for "Rosewill Mechanical Keyboard RK-9000BR with Cherry MX Brown Switch" if you can accept the fugly LOGO(and heard that the RMA/faulty rate of Rosewill is pretty high).

My first mechanical was a Leopold brown otaku tkl and I love it. Then I got a good deal on a blue switch version and I love that even more. No problems with either Leo board and love them both.

Can't wait to try reds next :-)

Seeing all these "what should I buy"-threads I think the keyboard oracle on deskthority is probably the best idea about that place. :)
I had a sig once but it's gone. It used to display an icon of a Kinesis. Just imagine that.

Rosewill and Leopold appear to be the same price.

I am looking for the exact same thing as you, trying to decide between the Leopold, or just going for a Filco. I'm also not 100% sure I want a numpad... you can always buy a separate numpad and TKL boards are so much cleaner.

If you don't want a numpad; the CM quickfires are basically rebranded Filco's (The keycaps may be of lesser value, though)

You can aftermarket a numpad, I bought a TKL because I could count on my hand how many times in my existence I've used a numpad; but of course it's personal preference.
