Leopold but what switches
« on: Thu, 22 March 2012, 12:17:03 »
I have decided to buy a leopold but i am still not sure what switches to take.
Choice: red, blue or brown switches

keyboards:

http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,fullsize&pid=fc500rtab BROWN
http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,fullsize&pid=fc500rrab RED
http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,fullsize&pid=fc500rcab BLUE

the red one is 10 dollars cheaper

I am a gamer/programmer so what switch suits me the best?

I also send an email about the customs since 56$ for shipping is reaaaaaaaaaly high

answer:

The shipping cost seems high? Do you have an alternative that is
cheaper?

The cost does not includes any customs duty or taxes in your country.

Best regards,
Brian

does somebody know how much the customs will be?

I got the Leopold TKL with reds and love it. Barely have to touch the keys for them to register. It's great for programming and gaming but if you tend to make a lot of typos you may find the lightness and linearity of the keys frustrating.

I also tried a Razer BlackWidow with blues. It was great to type on but I hated it for gaming. It felt like unless you pressed the keys straight down they would kind of bind, especially if you repeatedly pressed the same key.

Thanks for your reaction, i will make a lot of typos since this will be my first QWERTY keyboard :)
But i am not sure if that is a dealbreaker or not. I want a switch that is comfortable at typing(programming)/gaming.
What switch is somewhere between them.

What games are you playing?

I would go for browns/blues for rts/rpg and reds/blacks for fps.

I play a lot of League of legends, some fps and will be playing GW2 ^^
The problem i have atm is the custom cost, if my keyboards gets that cost, a filco will be 30 EUR cheaper.....

If you have the option to buy a Filco at that much less, get the Filco.  No sense importing a Leopold when a lot of people dislike the stabilizers used and build quality compared to Filco.  I say this as somebody who's considering getting a Leopold, but won't have to pay international freight, customs, and VAT, so I don't have any sort of grudge or agenda against them.

Reds were my second mech switches after buckling springs.  I still keep coming back to them, five keyboards later.  They feel absolutely fantastic to type on now that I've graduated from stiffer switches, and complement other light switches like Topres very well.  I still make a fair bit of typos on them, but I'm not the world's best typist in any case.  I can't recommend Reds enough if you're patient enough to deal with the learning curve of a low-pressure linear switch.

Blues have less of a curve, and I certainly have a higher WPM on them, but they feel ultimately less satisfying to type on, and Blacks are like Reds, but they take He-Man finger muscles to actuate, and will leave girly men like me feeling wholly inadequate after an hour of sweaty, bruised finger muscles.

How long until you fall down the Topre rabbit hole, friend?

When shipping cost half of the keyboard's price, you should seriously pay a good look at global.PChome then.

I haven't had any filcos but looking at the people opinion here those are one of the best keyboards on the market.

The best for you would be trying all of the switches and choosing the one you like the best (or buying them all and selling the ones that you don't like).
My personal preference:
red/black best when you can (and probably will) hit the key thousand times in a second , reds are light, blacks not so much
brown/blue when you like to feel the hey has been registered

I think browns are safe to buy first and later you can start saving for next keyboard because you want to have them all :)

I would have got a Filco here in the UK as well. But wanted reds and wanted cherry stabilisers as well as I prefer them to game on. The leo with reds from EK was a great choice for me. Love it!

Testing out switches isn't an option in Belgium ^^, no resellers....
I doubt between red or brown switches on the leopold... i guess red is better for gaming but will i still be able to type? isn't it too light ^^

CM Storm quick fire and filco can be purchased from there but I kinda understand your reservations but from what i've seen here pchome delivers quickly.

I would grab mx brown it's a safe choice, red is a nice switch but that little bit of tactile feeling is great for typing and games like sc2. Blues are a nice switch but I think unless you know what the sound is like, it's a risk.

Nothing wrong with it...Lol is more like sc2 if you are using all the keybinds and well I played a few hours of WoW (7 day scroll) and blues weren't an issue bearing in mind my last mmo time was back when I was on a membrane...I'd be very happy to play WoW with a brown board...I think I need some more cash.

I game more than anything on my keyboard and I purchased the Filco Black to test first and then I just recently picked up the Leopold red. I really like the red better for typing and gaming on I did a little comparison video for sound etc. I actually type slightly faster on the black than the red but I'm still getting used to this. I make a lot less mistakes on the red than the black after typing a little longer "less fatigue".   I only noticed one odd thing was the white paint on my keys are wearing down after just 1 week of owning this keyboard "leopold". The filco no wear at all but it was also $30+ more after shipping etc. Best I got so far on my cherry black was 134wpm with mistakes but 120's on my reds with no mistakes. I like them both but contemplating on even returning the filco because the overall durability and no paint wearing on the keys so far. I owned the filco for about 3 weeks or so now.
