Author Topic: Leopold full size keyboard keys wearing down after a week (Read 3603 times)

Anyone else have this experience the letters rubbing off? At this rate I'll have a self made "Otaku" =). I do light typing on this keyboard and notice the F buttons all look brand new the rest look like this has been used for a year or more. Still love the keyboard but I wanted to know if anyone else has this same experience with the Leopolds. Because the majestouch 2 filco I have shows no wear neither and have had it longer and did more typing on it. My dell dome keyboard for 9 years has no wear on the letters either. Keep in mind I baby this keyboard I don't even let anyone in my house touch it for one they don't like typing on the cherry mx reds lol which is great for me. Thanks for any info.

I wash my hands any time I even uncover this board the white is wearing off compared to the f keys which I rarely touch. Not a huge deal I just wanted to know if Filco in this aspect is just "you get what you pay for". Being this is a $99 keyboard compared to the $150 filco. I'll take some pics it's not extreme but yea it's wearing down more on some keys than others.

You should clean the keycap.
Sweat and dirt is always on you hand no matter how you wash it.
Filco uses pad printing, it is cheaper than lazer etch. So no to your question.
I'm glad I bought Ninja version, because I can feel the printing, which is a bit annoying.
Also because Filco use ABS keycap, they have to apply a clear UV coating. Which wears off.

Yea the keycap is cleaned the paint is definitely without a doubt fading god knows how much more these would fade had I even washed them regularly. Like I said I have cheap dome keyboards that show absolutely no wear after 9 years of heavy gaming and typing. My work stations are kept in immaculate condition. I steered away from other companies like rosewill etc. when I seen the keys paint were rubbing off after a week. Figured this would be different going through elitekeyboards. Anyway the filco I was going to return cause I rather the reds over the blacks I may just keep and move this to my gaming area. I'll take some pics after when the battery is done charging. I gotta find out where else I can get Cherry mx Reds from. I would really appreciate any suggestions on another forum they said Ducky is also good. I wish I could get the Filco Ninja with cherry mx switch.

Laser etch doesn't fade easily, but the white fill-in does. The white fill-in can also be dyed (can not be wash off).
The white fill-in is needed because laser etch burn the plastic which leave a black mark. Black on black printing is not a good idea.
I'm just surprised it happen so fast.
Pad print which is cheaper and the one Filco uses doesn't fade easily.
Pad print is also the printing technology rubber dome boards uses.

They say this is Lasered English key legends w/white in-fill. Thanks exort for that information it's not extreme but after a week I notice this compared to a cheap dome I didn't expect that. I'm sure in a month it will be even worse. I put the video up on my youtube to help other people out but this kinda sucks cheap dell keyboard shows no wear and this is wearing with every press of my keys just typing this.

This is just after a week of light typing some speed tests but nothing out of the ordinary. The dell keyboard took a beating in a half from all the years of typing on it and still no wear on the letters. The plastic itself on the keycap is wearing down on the edges of some keys but no wear on the letters. I don't know if the screenshots were doing it justice or even the video but it shows the wear. It's spotty in some areas moreso than others although the enter key is holding up fine. The keys in some areas are worse than others I'll see how they look after a month or so. I'll upload the shots also.

I loved my Filco for about a year. Now the finish is wearing off only a portion of the keys and it looks pretty bad...

UV coating does wear over time.
It is require for ABS key cap because ABS doesn't have good UV resistance.

Recommend you go buy a set of PBT key cap if it really bothers you.
PBT doesn't need a coating, and have better wear resistance.

Although a bit tedious, would wiping down ABS keys with disinfecting wipes help reduce the amount of wear / shinny buildups?

Sometimes pad printed caps last longer than laser etched.
At least thats what I noticed with the few differents caps I have had.

Cleaning the keys wont help with the shining. The shining is just mechanical wear. So cleaning them wont help. It might help for the laser infill, but thats about all.

I never tried, but I can't see any reason it might work.
You physicality wear down the coating and plastic.
