steelseries 6gv2 problem
« on: Sun, 25 March 2012, 12:02:08 »
Hello. So, let me explain what happened first: I turned on my pc, but since I was needed to go afk for sometime I just left my PC turned on for some time. After about 30mins I came back and touched my keyboard and I got an electric shock from it.. I decided to replug keyboard at usb, but after that my pc was going crazy. Keyboard wasnt typing anything I want and windows started open random folders.. After I changed my keyboard to my old one and Ive restarted pc, windows started work properly, but if I plug my 6gv2 at pc windows again going crazy..

So my questions are simple:
1) whats happened to my keyboard and why?
2) is there any way to repair it?

thanks for answers

You zapped your board with static. Do you have carpeted floors? They - especially synthetic ones - are the biggest cause for static buildup. I,for example, have a really nasty chair that generates insane amounts of static electricity and I have to touch a radiator to ground myself after getting up every time. My scariest moments were when I zapped a couple of expensive Asus motherboards. Fortunately they survived, while it appears that your keyboard hasn't.

Well I havent any carpets.. I was sleeping in my home wear between two blankets, thats where I could get the static.. But Im not so sure because everything was OK before with the same conditions and in the same situations... I bought new 6G and got an idea how to use old, but Im kinda scared right now to use new keyboard because those ~100$ is not a little money for a student in my country T_T

Anyways thanks for answers :)

Well, the 6gv2 is a steel plate board, so any static discharge built up in the user should go through that to wherever it can go, Ive never opened up my 6gv2 but if the board is anywhere close to proper designed the plate will be connected to the shield of the USB cable and should dissipate straight into your computer (that ofc also is grounded). If its not designed like this then yeah, you can have fried the board.

Nonetheless, id just return it under warranty. The board was introduced in q2 2010 and in the EU it has a 2yr warranty so you should be fine if you live there. If you live in the US i hope you bought the board more recently cuz there the warranty is only 1 year.

If you wanna lose the board, i can give you $20 for it :D
