Steelseries 7G - Keyswitch swapping
« on: Tue, 27 March 2012, 00:33:54 »
I'm no keyboard enthusiast but I love my 7G, until the point that I tried my friend's BW ultimate.

After feeling and hearing the clack of the Cherry MX blue switches, I started researching the possibility to change the Black switches in my 7G to Cherry MX blue keyswitches.

Some questions...
Is this still possible even with "plate-mounted" keyswitches?

Is it possible even to swap Black for Blue, WITHOUT soldering?

Thanks in advance to whoever lends a hand.
Also, I apologize if this has been asked before in another thread, I did search the forums for anything related to this, but found nothing.
And apologies again if you folks don't like steelseries, I see a lot of Filco, WASD, Razer love in here. Don't hate meeeeeee <3

Thanks again for your time!!! <3<3

Well, I'm not quite the expert as someone like Ripster. But in my short time with keyboards I believe the answer to your question is no, being plate mounted I believe you would have to unsolder and swap out the switches (by all means someone correct me if I'm wrong). I have a Noppoo Choc Mini, which is plate mounted, and when I broke a stem on one of my switches I had to buy a new switch and solder it in. The plate prevented me from being able to remove the top cap from the assembly.

Honestly though, your statement about you not being a keyboard enthusiast...give it time. You'll find yourself wanting more and more keyboards, I can't help but try to bargain with my wife to find ways to afford more.

I feel that urge already.. what with just wanted new keyswitches.  I've been looking into the das ultimate, blank keycaps, mx blues, etc... the 7G just doesn't quite fill the role I want it to.  I live alone so having them blues wouldn't be an issue.

Also, quite disheartening to hear that I can't just replace the keyswitches. As I don't feel confident enough soldering anything I might just buy a new keyboard ; ;...

Personally I thought sound might be an issue, so I went with a brown switch at first. Honestly though, It doesn't really matter. People at work are more confused at the shape of my keyboard (KBC Poker) than they are annoyed by the sound. I'm glad to have gone with the blue switches, they have a more tactile feel and I really enjoy the sound.

Soldering is fairly easy, at least with on the keyswitch level, however if you were to go out and buy 104 keyswiches, it'd probably be worth it just to buy a second keyboard (considering price and time).

Nothing wrong with Steelseries other than the keycaps imo (oh and the layout :p)
