IBM black on white label, is it worth it?
« on: Tue, 27 March 2012, 23:30:34 »
So, I found an IBM keyboard for sale, the seller says that it has the following info on the back label:

Code: [Select]
MODELO 30  286

SERIE: 0000-IEP-0150696
FECHA: 27.DICIEMBRE 1990
PLANTA  IEPP  MODELO  M

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 46046

I suppose it's a second generation Model M, but I can't be sure and the guy selling it isn't the most sympathetic person. He's selling it for around $30 dollars.

And on another front, some other guy is selling this:
[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 46045

Any good?

Thanks.

The attachments aren't working for me.

Ripster: I much prefer your new signature to the huge one that got cut off on my laptop's screen.

It looks like this is the original advertisement:  http://articulo.mercadolibre.cl/MLC-39585057-vendo-ibm-bconegro-para-repuestos-_JM

The stuff the seller quoted is the model number of the computer itself, not the keyboard.  From the photo looks like a nice clean Model M (usually black-on-white are more prized than blue label).  Once upon I time I would have collected the PS/2 as well, now I think it will probably either get junked (the 30 pin SIMMs from it can be vaguely useful as parts for other junk).

Hey I know those!

Too bad you hated my sig.

Karma's a b**ch. Although I didn't see any warnings about being honest. Any change in the bulshido?
By the way, the bold sans serif on your avatar doesn't match your signature either.

dorkvader, fixed it, thanks.

ed_avis, thanks, I guess I'll try to buy it if I can give it a try first, I'm a bit suspicious about it.

Suspicious about what? It seems it's a 1990 white label model M.

About the seller, that looks like an a**hole wanting to scam somebody. Worst case scenario I lose $30.

Or I get a rubber dome.

Between the two keyboards, I'd go for the first. $30 is about the average price for a Model M. It looks quite clean (and you get some extra hardware). You definitely won't want a rubber dome after you've tried a Model M... unless it's a Topre Realforce of course. :biggrin1:

Yeh, I've had a Model M before, but over here it isn't that easy to get your hands on one of them, specially with spanish layout.

The rubber dome one, does it use the same stem though? Could I give some use to the keycaps or any other spare parts?

Prices are indeed going up on Model M/Fs.

The bottom board is a KB-8923 which is very good as mid-late-90s rubber dome boards go, but I would certainly not pay over $10 for it.

The keys from the 8923 will interchange with some HP and Sony rubber domes, but not buckling springs.

Also, I learned, the hard way, that the Model M rubber domes (71... series keys) DO NOT work on other Model Ms.

It has arrived!

The keyboard looks fine, it has a crust of dirt on each key, so I will clean them tomorrow when I have time, the case isn't damaged at all, not even a scratch, but also pretty dirty, will see if I get a nut to open it up, since I'm not at my place.

Anyways, the description was accurate and finally the seller, an old lady, was the nicest people on earth, just couldn't express herself accordingly in her mails.
Thanks for the advice.
