Lots of people don't like buckling springs. First, they are really heavy. Second, they are very loud. Third, they are only attached to model m's that are huge. Fourth, some people only like linier switches.
I do like buckling springs but I can see why a lot of people don't

I have a couple of opinions about buckling springs, which I came to by using a white label ibm model m (at least i think its white, its over at my parents place).  I love the tactile feel and the noise.  I think its great.  However, I do have a bit of a complaint.  My knowledge of mechanical keyboards includes cherry blues in a cherry G80-3000, linear alps in the DSI big font mechanical keyboard, and brief experience with tactile alps in a friends ABS gaming keyboard.  So I like the noise and the tactility of the model m, but I feel like my fingers crash into the bottom of the stroke...  something that i find to be unavoidable.  yes they're incredibly precise, yes they're some of the cheapest mechanical keyboards out there, especially when you consider the build quality (at least mine was in super excellent shape whenever i got it), but its (at least in my experience) virtually impossible NOT to bottom out the keys and beat up the tips of your fingers during normal use.

my daily keyboard is the board with cherry blues.  if you want tactile click i think blues are the way to go.  however, there is a veeeery small gap between when the click mechanism resets and when the switch resets.  it is possible (if you're trying) to register multiple keystrokes without the mechanical mechanism resetting.  normally this doesnt happen, but if i'm not paying attention and typing really fast it'll happen.  very rare, but still possible.  with the buckling springs however, the click IS the switch.  they're one in the same.  all being said, i've found the crunchy cherry blues to be more pleasurable to type on than buckling spring.  both are super fantastic keyswitches though.  recently i have been wanting to get my model m back from my parents place just to spend some more time with it, if only to remind myself how wonderful cherry blues are.
Latest addition: KBT Race 75% (Cherry Brown), IBM Model M (white label 1991), Cherry G80-3000 (Blue Cherries), Unicomp Customizer (Black on black, blank), DSI Big Font Keyboard (Alps linear)

They're super intense at first, but give them a week or so before making a judgement...

They're not only attached to Model Ms... they're also on Model Fs, where the tactile curve is far, far nicer (not anywhere near as stiff feeling, due to the spring not having as much preload or whatever). ;)

I find BS boards OK.  The biggest thing going for the model M in my opinion is ruggedness and build quality (except for the whole rivet thing).  The caps hold up amazing.  There are no stupid issues with the keycap legends looking odd or being spaced oddly - the model M cap legends are, IMO, the defecto standard for how keys should be printed.  The thing weighs a ton and exudes quality.

On the other hand, they're noisy enough to wake the neighbours (mine is floss modded and it's still somewhat of a problem) and they are not a good option if you're looking for lighter weight.  I've been using a model M at work for a while and I'm finally trialing a Realforce variable and a Leo w/ browns as a replacement.  I'm getting tired of the noise and want to go somewhat lighter weight.  On the other hand, I don't think I'll ever actually part with the model M.  It will just go back on the shelf.

There's no way I could use a model M at home, it would wake the kids up.  I think that there may be some advantages to be gained by using the same switches at home and office instead of changing feel everywhere I go.  Time will tell.

Nice thread title, starting from the viewpoint which assumes that buckling springs are bad, and then appears to ask proponents of buckling springs to defend their fondness for them. Your pre-supposition is unwise, and appears to be trolling, even if that is not your intention. Here's a polite suggestion:

"What is it you like about buckling spring keys?"

This sounds a little less arrogant, if you'll forgive me observing that the title does sound arrogant, to me.

He apparently did it with other switches too: "How can you like reds?", etc.

First answer (the troll face) is the only correct one ; )

I found this BS board at work, it's no model m and after reading the wiki, I learned that it's a poorly done Chinese clone BS board.

With that said, the board has an uncomfortably short travel distance, so much so, that it's really off-putting. Does the Model Ms and current Unicomp boards suffer from that?

I do like the travel distance of the Cherry MX switches, I'm wondering how comparable the 'legit' BS boards' travel distance is to Cherry MX.

Real BS boards have quite long travel. At least as much as MX if not more.
