A good gaming headset
« on: Mon, 02 April 2012, 09:34:23 »
Hello everyone,

I am in the market for a good gaming headset and was wondering if anybody here had any good recommendations. I currently have a Plantronics headset that, despite the mediocre reviews, has lasted me a couple of years without any problems. However, the headset is a little uncomfortable. I know that the Astro A40 is up top as one of the best headsets around, but currently, can't afford the high price tag. So, if anyone has any recommendations on a good and decently priced (100-125) headset, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty happy with Corsair's new line of gaming gear.

What I did was buy a set of good headphones (For me I got the Alessandro MS-1i for $100) and then buy a clip on mic.
For clip-on mics, I'm using the Zalman ZM-MIC1, it's like $9 and it's decent as long as you use mic boost and noise cancellation.
Then there is the AntLion ModMic that I hear is quite good, but it's $30.

Quite happy with my Sennheiser PC156 had it for over 4 years how still sounds as good etc.

Mic isn't the best but it's not awful and the thing is fairly durable. I can't speak for their proper gaming range but know a friend likes his.

+1 on the zalman zm-mic1

If you're wanting to improve your sound, the ATH-AD700 and ATH-A700 are good choices not only for gaming but for music and general use as well.  I have an ATH-AD900 and the sound is phenomenal.  Like the AD700, the AD900 is open-back so it's not particularly bassy.  If you're into that sort of thing, the closed-back A700 is a good choice.  The 3D-wing headband is surprisingly light and extremely comfortable.

Other choices in the $100~130 price range:
Grado SR60i / 80i
Senheisser HD518 or HD448

Be warned, the Grado SR60i / 80i stylings and sound signature are a bit of an acquired taste.  When you try them on for a listen, you'll either instantly love them or instantly hate them.  Nothing in between.  The Senheisser HD518 and HD448 have more tamed stylings and sound great.  Stay away from the Senheisser HD280.  This is a niche set of headphones.  Unless you're a pure bass head (drums, bass guitar, or the thump thump thump of techno music), I recommend you pass.  I would skip everything in the $150 range since the real upgrade from any of these sets starts at about $200.  The only gem in the $150 range is the ATH-M50.

The Logitech G35 would be right up your alley price-wise. I currently own it and have had it for 2 years now. Can't complain. It may not be the BEST sound quality you'll find in a headset, but it's good enough for a $100 headset!

I'm pretty partial to Steel series headsets. My sound card is not incredibly good so I like to try and find a better mic on a headset. I've been using Steel Series 5Hv2 headset and currently (4-5-12) on amazon.com, they're only $49.99 and I would swear by them compared to anything else I've used in the past 4+ years.

Just so you know, if you're still looking for a GREAT headset, Lukasevic mentioned SteelSeries.

Ad700 has been my go to for almost 2 years now.

Great soundstage and extremely light weight
No, he’s not around. How that sound to ya? Jot it down.

I am going to have to disagree with HD280 being a bassy phone. M50 are more bassy but he doesn't mention it. I really want to see him listen to some XB1000s ;D His head might implode.
AD700 has less bass than bass lite phones, and have a mid centric voicing. Not my cup of tea. There aren't really any other good alternative at this price point though.

I have to agree with lorem3k on this one. I'd rather purchase a great pair of solid headphones and find a clever way to attach a microphone. The type of microphones needed for VOIP are a dime-a-dozen. The asking price for some gaming headsets is absolutely ridiculous considering the poor construction and materials they offer. I picked up a simple 3.5mm male/female audio extension cable and this microphone. I use neatly trimed industrial velcro to attach it to my headphones. The total cost of materials ends up being less than shipping if you order from Amazon.

The Audio Technica AD700 headphones have awesome sound stage and are very comfortable. If you are looking for some bass heavy cans look elsewhere :) The Audio Technica M-50 headphones are closed and might appeal to you as well.

Don't take my word for it—check out head-fi and do some research. You will find all the resources you need :)

Cheers!

steelseries Siberia v2 at your price point.

Sennheiser PC360 is better if you can stretch to it

Beats the pants off any other dedicated headset.

Don't know about MMX whatsit though...

I use the Turtle Beach Earforce X12, and like it a lot. I used to use a clip-on mic, and that was also a great solution (since I could use it with my nice headphones).

Do not buy a headset. Get more bang for your buck by buying a quality pair of cans (ATH-AD700's for good spacialization & placement or Sennheiser 280HD's for stronger bass, mids, and clarity--$100) and a desktop mic (Logitech USB $20).

You'll end up with better gear than is available with the best of headsets for a comparable price.
