I traded another GH'er here my Poker w/ Ergo clears for a Unicomp Ultra Classic, and I've been on it for most of this week. I must say: HOLY F**KING SH*T!!!! This thing is awesome. How come when I had my old Customizer it wasn't as much just pure unadulterated awesome? Between this and my 87UB, I may never touch another Cherry switch again. I'm actually faster by an average of 10-20wpm on the Buckling Spring than on any of my other boards. What the hell. Is this normal for BS keyboards?

Yup, between topre switches and buckling springs i see no reason to even look back at a cherry switch without feeling like a low class keyboard peasant. That's why when people argue about mx switches and what they feel like it's almost as useless as the war on drugs. If topre wasn't so expensive and the remade buckle boards could actually bring the true "feeling back" then the board would be nothing but page long posts. Why? Because you just cant stop typing on pure awesomeness.

I wish they had compact capacitive buckling spring keyboards, my model f is really huge 0.0 and the layout is really weird :D.

Yeah, I remember the old Model F from back in the XT days.  I used to fix my Aunt's old IBM PC and even then I thought it was weird.  It's pretty much the reason I have not been interested in these, despite their feel.  On the other hand, it was the feel of that keyboard that probably helped spoil me in first place.  :)

Love buckling springs, but I'm having a bit of a holiday from them at the moment.  They were making my hands fatigued after typing all day.  (They say you get used to that, but for me the problem has got worse not better over time.  Sad.)

A bone stock Model M is loud.  Now that I have grease-modded and floss-modded a couple, I find an unmodded fairly annoying.  But I still have a couple of vintage 1987 ones that I keep all original for fun.

It is wonderful, isn't it? I just wish they could make the Ultra Classic cases sturdier and heavier, but I suppose there's really no need. I type faster on the Unicomp myself, but the Cherries are just more fun to type on. Nice and light!

Your ergo clear Poker is in excellent condition by the way, now to find a guide on how to work this crazy layout.

I have the goofy old XT Model F and the layout really isn't as bad as you'd think. The one thing that trips me up now and again is pressing the \ key instead of the left Shift key. Everything else is pretty easy to get used to.


Now I just gotta figure out how to lubricate the thing. I feel like a few keys are giving me trouble after being stored in a basement for 25 years.

Sometimes it's enough to remove the keycap and clean the stem and inside of the barrel from dust, sand or other stuff which managed to get there.

There were definitely a few that I reseated incorrectly, but these last few seem to require a more hands-on approach. It's specifically d, l, and ; that seem to have trouble registering on time or even at all, in some cases.

my next project is to make a new barrel plate and capacitive matrix for an XT. if that works, anyone should be able to mod a model F into any layout they can dream up. like a left handed tenkeyless.
