Looking for a gaming (mainly MOBA) keyboard
« on: Fri, 13 April 2012, 08:42:37 »
Decided to use the 'What Should I Buy Form' and see if that works.

General Questions

1) What is your budget?
Wouldn't want it to be too expensive, but wouldn't mind paying for a good keyboard that will last for a long time.

2) Where (country) will you be buying this keyboard and keyboard language layout?
The Netherlands (Europe). QWERTY
EDIT: Please try to make sure that I don't have to pay a ridiculous amount of shipping if possible :/

3) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you don’t really like?
Nope.

4) Would you consider keyboards that are used?
Would prefer a new one.

5) What are the primary tasks you will be performing with this keyboard?
Gaming and typing some stuff out for school or whatever.

6) Will you be playing games on your keyboard? What type of games?
Yes, mainly MOBA games (League of Legends and DotA2)

7) Would you prefer to see the keyboard you’re considering before purchasing it or buying a keyboard online without seeing it is OK?
It's okay to but it online but I'll probably look around some shops nearby to test whatever you guys recommend if I can, but I have faith in you :)

8) Will the keyboard be used for Windows, Mac, Linux, etc...?
Windows 7

9) What other keyboard(s) have you used before and why are you not using it/them anymore?
Standard Acer keyboard. Think that a mechanical keyboard would be a lot better :)

Build Quality and Design

10) What size keyboard would you prefer?
a.Full-Size (with number pad)
b.Ten-Keyless (without number pad) <<<<
c.Don’t Care

11) Are the keyboard’s looks and stylishness important to you? If so, describe any physical features such as color, material appearance, etc...
Not really, has to be durable though and last for a decent amount of time. Would be cool if it had some media options (play, pause, volume etc.) but not really the greatest requirement. Backlighting also a plus, but not a requirement.

12) When are you buying the keyboard?
Soon I think.

13) How long do you want this keyboard to last?
Long enough for it to be justifiable to spend that much money on a keyboard :p

Switch Questions

14) What key sound do you want?
a.Quiet
b.Medium
c.Loud
d.Don’t Care
<<<<<<<< (I do some gaming at night though so I might not pick the loudest keyboard, but feel free to recommend them anyway if they fit in my requirements.)

15) Do you want tactile feel?
a.Yes
b.No
c.Don’t Care <<<<<<

16) Do you want clickiness?
a.Yes
b.No
c.Don’t Care
<<<<<<<<

17) How strong are your fingers?
a. Very Weak
b. Weak
c. Medium
d. Strong
e. Very strong
f. Doesn't matter

Keyboard Components

18) PS/2 or USB
PS/2 is an option (would be cool to have NKey)

19) Media keys? Macro Keys? Backlight? USB Hub?
None of these are requirements but would be nice: Media keys (or at least media options) and backlight.

Customization
(Not sure what I should put here).

Thanks for the help :)

Yo man, I've just joined too and am looking for advice from these guys aswell.

TBH your form is quite broad. Looks like anything would suit your purposes.

Might I suggest thinking more on what you actually really need and want.

Had one of these a few months ago, looks like it exceeds your requirements. http://eclipsetouch.com/wirelessltkey.htm#img/wltk/wltk1.jpg
But I don't doubt its sacrilege linking things like that in here ;p

He asked about a mechanical keyboard :p.

@OP:

If you don't want to do anything wrong, pick a filco with brown switches from keyboardco. It's the most standart thing you can do. But most people say it is overpriced (150/160€ in total). And it doesn't have backlit. But it still is a damn nice keyboard.

After that, it's more of a personal preference and regional availability, as we don't easily have access to leopold or quickmaster or rosewill in europe.

Leopold is another good option if you want to save some money. No idea what availability is like in NL.

He asked about a mechanical keyboard :p.

To be precise he said "Think mechnical would be better." Mech is no "better" it is preference. Both dome and mech have kep presses far in excess of nearly all user.

He's not a typist, not using it for work - has no experience of mech and doesn't really need one.

The £6 "Logik" from my local crappy retailer meets his requirments.

Dude. Come on. GH is almost exclusively mechanical-kb focused. What did you expect?

Nah, I called him out saying « He asked about a mechanical keyboard :p », whereas he didn't.

But heh, I think if he goes the extra mile to ask about what keyboard we advice, he somehow wants to please himself with something nicer than the 10 buck keyboard. And I'm pretty sure mechanical keyboards are better and not just a preference. The question is more if you want to pay the price of a mechanical keyboard or not.

Should've been more precise, but I'm looking for a mechanical keyboard yeah.

So no real recommendations then I guess? Not even what type of switch to get for MOBA games?

non-clicky switches will be the resounding response, but tactile vs. linear will be a  preference.  because it's hard to know one way or the other on a linear switch, the recommendation is almost ALWAYS browns, since it'll be easy to tell if you do or don't like a tactile switch with them.

filco is suggested because if you don't like the switch, it'll be faster and easier to resell it, and buy something else.

Best advice is to try out some keyboards with different types of switches in order to see what you like.  I use MX-Blues to play dota 2 with over 200 games and there's nothing bad to be said.  Accidental key presses will ALWAYS be the users fault.  Just make sure whichever keyboard you do buy, get used to the lay out, think about the key presses, and then gradually quicken everything.

The only switch around my area that can be tried out is the MX-BLUE because they come in razor black widow keyboards.  If you can't demo a keyboard you can buy used and hope for the best.  If not sell it for the same price and try a different switch.

MOBA games need their double-tapping to be top notch (invoker...)

Ppl tend to say the best switch for that is blacks as you can repress without letting the switch fully return to the original position.

I never managed to do that yet though...

You can do that on Brown's and reds. I'd go either browns or reds but lean toward browns. I play a lot of LoL. Filco, Leopold, coolermaster. All good choices. And tenkeyless for sure :)

As already mentioned, a tenkeyless Filco with browns would be the safe choice here.
