NMB from the thrift store
« on: Mon, 16 April 2012, 20:23:05 »
Hey, I found this guy at the local St. Vinny's for the princely sum of $1.06.  There aren't a lot of markings on it, just a bright orange sticker on the front that indicates that if I use it, I will surely be killed.  On the back, there is a model number, RT8252C+ and another large orange sticker informing me that I will be killed if I try to use the keyboard.  It feels really nice to type on...actually, it feels and sounds a lot like a keyboard with cherry blues...But its another switch type that I am not familiar with.   Attached are some pictures of it.

The switches are NMB space invaders, I agree they do feel like MX Blues but I like them better. They have none of the jerky awkwardness the MX Blues have. The keyboard is nice and heavy too and yours even looks clean!
If you live in AZ you can try my keyboards. I usually keep plenty of different ALPS and MX and buckling springs.

It didn't come clean -- it was actually quite grimey when I got it...it probably saw a lot of use, but it feels great to type on.  Very different than the Model M buckling spring, but still very good.  Not sure which I like more though.  They are both great switch types.

You gotta be careful with the phone cameras: mine's awful, but if you're careful, you can get pretty impressive pictures out of them. Just don't get too close: they can't do macro at all. It's best to back away a bit so it can focus, then crop the image later.

That said, that's a rather nice find! I'll have to trawl the local thrift stores again, but there's really rarely anything cool. Sometimes there'll be a vintage calculator with doubleshots, but not often.

IS the keytravel the same as a normal cherry? I always imagined the NMB to be less travel.

I found one of these at a thrift store too and I didn't buy it! I'm pretty dumb, huh? The one I found had something that looked like cat throw up all over the plate, it was very yellow, and smelled like smoke, most of the switches on the main typing block felt different too. It would have been a big restoration project but I really regret not buying it.
