Swapping boards with ease? Mini-USB/Coils/Multi-Keyboards?
« on: Wed, 18 April 2012, 07:52:45 »
So i was thinking of picking up a 3rd board after my HHKP2 and thought about how nice it would be to get a board where i could share the same detachable Mini-A USB cable. That way it would be as easy as popping it out of the HHKB and plugging my other keyboard in without having to mess around with the cable in my tower. I don't own any coils for my mouse or keyboard but if this would be the most efficient way of going about this i will end up buying one.

Which brought me to creating this thread for those who constantly switch between different boards.

1. How do you swap boards out?
2. Do you use a coil with a USB attachment for all your boards?
3. Which USB Coil would you suggest?
4. Do you keep more then 1 keyboard plugged in at one time? 1 USB 1 PS/2?
5. Which boards share a mini-a USB plug-in?
6. USB Hubs?
7. Are there any boards with USB 3.0? [My next tower has a bunch of USB 3.0]

I only have a laptop, So I have the laptop keyboard and my filco keyboard. I simply jack the keyboard in each time*I'm at home, and then leave it on the desk once I move away.

1. I use 2 USB extension cables I have enough usb ports on my computer otherwise and I only bought one (sadly they don't work with flash disks meh)
4. Yep usually have ps/2 and usb board in when at home kinda annoying that some older games don't play nice with that...
6. Why not? Seems plausable.
7. Well considering...the only difference is bandwidth for data transfer (effectively). There won't be in short the technology doesn't impact on keyboards, no doubt razer will release a usb 3.0 board with 24gb of memory!

I have had mixed luck with USB hubs. When they work at all, they work great, and I think that the extra boost of power is very helpful (I only use powered ones). Especially since I use mammoth old buckling spring boards that need a lot of juice.

However, I have had very bad luck with powered USB hubs, and probably half of the ones that I have bought have not worked. It seems to be more of a software issue than hardware, the indicator lights up and the device manager says "this device is working properly" but it just isn't.

Since they are cheap, I just ditch them and buy something new. I am not enough of a techie to try to figure it out.

To provide for calling forth the Militia  to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

I seriously have 3 usb hubs that dont work with a single thing plugged into it. I just don't ****ing get it, and why they don't work. Nothing I plug into them works, not even a jump drive. This is also another part of my post to figure out if there are people who do indeed use working USB hubs for many boards.

Do any boards share the mini A USB port?
