Bolt modded M in industrial case
« on: Sun, 29 April 2012, 01:40:43 »
I noticed this on eBay while browsing the "BIN' IBM listings for deals

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Grey-White-and-Red-IBM-Model-M-Clicky-Keyboard-Mint-USB-Adapter-/110870285506?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item19d0624cc2#ht_626wt_936

Note (From the description):
"Please be aware that this is not an IBM Industrial Keyboard. It is a regular IBM Model M that has the internals transferred to a new grey IBM Model M case."

I don't know what the industrial cases go for from unicomp, but this appears to be a little-used M from '91 that's been bolt-modded. I thought it looked pretty nice.

He certainly is. I bought an SSK from kinkng late last year - one of the best transactions I've made. This seller's got high attention to detail and is true to his word.

I think I may have bought something from him, too.

The light blue label detracts from the effect, however. Don't real industrials have black labels, black field, that is?

Also, has anyone here ever successfully dyed a Model M case?

Yeah, I think you're right. The industrial Ms came with a silver-on-black badge, like these.

I believe wcass dyed his Model M.

I seem to recall kinkng selling those black IBM badges a few months ago. Maybe he's run out of them.

I bought one of those from him, as well as a space saver logo from my Greenock Industrial.  Worth every penny in my book, guy has awesome stuff.

On another note I've dyed two of my model m's black (for that faux Das look).

What product did you use to dye the case? (is it available in the US?)

Did it "take" evenly with one soak, or did it take multiples?

I'm glad for your input, though I would say that the black model M gives off more of a "unicomp" look to me :p

Hmm, given the huge amount of IBM searching I've been doing on ebay of late, I'm surprised I haven't stumbled across this listing before. Perhaps I just didn't take note of it because of the price.

I may be wrong, but I believe this case was actually spray painted. I can't remember where I read that, but I also came across this listing a while ago on ebay.

geekhackers are happy to write volumes on almost any subject, but if you want a deafening silence, then ask the question:

"Can ABS keys or cases be dyed?"

I am working on the problem, and I did get a partial/mediocre result dyeing ABS keys in powdered RIT dye (the liquid is ineffective) for about half an hour at 150F/65C, as hot as I dared because I thought I started to see deformation at that point. I was using a cooking thermometer that may not have been too accurate (although that is the range where you want your meat measurements to be spot on), but theoretically ABS is good to something around 170F/80C.

Cases, being long and thin, are probably going to be very difficult to keep straight. My next step is to go to a thrift store and buy a couple of junk boards for a dollar each and have at it.

Any advice or experience here would be appreciated, but I have asked the question at least half a dozen times and never gotten any meaningful answers, either positive or negative.

Thanks

That might be the case, (hah), but I don't think it's painted. I believe there were some Model M industrial cases that unicomp got rid of a while ago, it's reasonable to say the seller likely has one of them.
