Need Keyboard Advice [Brown Switches]
« on: Mon, 14 May 2012, 04:46:49 »
Hey guys!

So I was looking into purchasing a cherry mx brown keyboard.

Filco - Heard a lot of great reviews about this keyboard, unfortunately it costs too much for me.
Leopold - This seemed like my best solution, however I would like to add a colored keycap set (undecided on color) and I heard the 500R's space bar was incompatible with keycaps, and I don't want to use the 200R because I love the numpad, it's just something I've always used.
Das Silent - I am also heavily considering this, however it's just a tiny bit more than I would like to pay, and I heard the glossy finish is quite annoying. However, the keycaps fit (I believe).

If you guys know about any keyboards from $100-$120, Cherry MX Browns, solid build, and compatible with all keycaps from WASD please leave a recommendation.

I am open to all options.

Thanks!

Edit: I have browsed multiple forums over multiple hours, even gone through a lot of Ripster's guides, however I find some of the information there outdated, and I'm also unable to cross-analyze reviews about keyboards which are less known.

The question you have to ask yourself is: Is price a major issue or not. Are you tight on money at the end of month or not ?

If you are living in fine conditions, then go and take the filco. Is it overpriced compared to alternatives ? Probably, if not certainly. Is it worth his money ? Hell yes.

You litteraly can't go wrong with filco. It's like going IBM in the 80s. Or mercedes if you want a car.

You'll enjoy your filco everyday because it's one of the best keyboard on the market, with almost no flaws, and you know it. You know you went a little crazy to enjoy yourself by typing on a nice piece of machinery. You probably will never regret it. And it's worth it, just for having that feeling of having made a good choice.

If you take something else, you'll probably always think, « what if I'd have gone filco instead ? ».

If it's the only keyboard you are buying, then why not get one of the best ? And if you'll end up with a lot of keyboards, you'll get at least one filco no matter what, almost everyone on this board has a filco. So just go ahead.

It's the little pleasures that make life enjoyable. Like typing on your filco everyday :D.

It's also the most standart keyboard, so a lot of custom keycaps/case will fist be designed for a filco tkl.

Note that this was my thought process when buying my first keyboard (a filco). This doesn't mean that other keyboard are worse than filco. But filco has the reputation and hype no other keyboard has.

If you want a good price/quality ratio, get a quickfire storm :P.

Damn myself, now I want to buy a HHKB xD.

I guess my next question is, where could I find a spacebar that would fit a 500R Leopold, or how much it would cost to mod it?

I've got a Leopold 500R with browns and I like it quite a lot, other than the spacebar issue, I just have left the stock space on and changed all the rest to PBT, not ideal but I live with it.

If you want a spacebar to fit it you could ask TheProfosist in this thread http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?26458-Keycaps-Modded-to-Fit-Your-Board and he might be able to mod a WASD one for you.

Why not just order from WASD?  just about fits your price range and it's a quality board.  Filco would be 100% compatible but more expensive - rosewill I believe is also compatible but I keep seeing posts about controller issues (although the red plate is kinda sexy)
Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)
