Quick question...
« on: Wed, 16 May 2012, 08:30:36 »
Can anyone give me a reason why using a BlacWidow or BlackWidow Ultimate (blues or browns, macros, key mapping, etc.) would not be the best mechanical keyboard choice for someone setting up a machine for photo and/or video editing, coding, or other intensive typing purposes?  Let's get the obvious out of the way.  I have many mechanical keyboards, including BlackWidows, Filcos, Duckys, and others, so this is NOT a "which is the best mechanical keyboard" question.  It is a "which is the best mechanical keyboard FOR" question.

I love your humor.  Actually, you are probably the best equipped to answer this question.  But, I respect your abstention.

Vow of silence.

Have you ever noticed answers are long?  Questions are quick?

I'm lucky...  I'm 64 years old, single, disabled, and live in the middle if the Negev Desert.  I have no need for such a vow.

You need a good army when your country is fifty miles wide.

Which keyboard is best for editing, well ain't that a matter of taste. Anyway in my opinion the best is a normal QWERTY keyboard you feel comfortable with, and then learn the shortcut's in the program you are using.

Having owned my Razer Ultimate now for better than a month ripster nailed it in the link he gave you.............. Great board, mechanically no big problems, but all the things noted are issues. My board will dim, brighten on occasion and I do worry about the back lighting having issues individually on the keys and then of course the wear in the future. I don't beat and bang on it so it should be OK, however I'm looking to grab another board here to make sure. Shoulda, woulda, coulda.......

The programmable, macro keys are neat- they work great-- although if it goes into hibernation you have to click the razer icon to get them to wake up I guess as they are unresponsive. As long as you don't allow it to hiber you will be fine. You could always just remap a few keys as well.........

I do an enormous amount of photo, video editing (Photoshop, Vegas Pro) and I really, personally don't see the big benefit of the programmable keys, etc. I will say the back lighting is beneficial sometimes, but as seen in ripsters link your sort of looking over your shoulder all the time when you see them dim and brighten once or twice.

Otherwise if I had to do it again I would opt out for a simpler board and go with the shortcuts vs programmable keys as someone earlier said. All the media, etc. keys are to noisy and I would rather go without. Same problem why some do not like the CM Storm- enough already.  I'm already working on swapping some keys out:}

Thanks for all the input.  Guess I agree with the "simple is better"/"learn the program shortcuts" approach, especially if your video work is not the only thing that you do with your keyboard.
