Wyse terminal board- what does "select" do?

subject says all...  don't seem to be able to read that keypress using xev.  Rest of keyboard works exactly as you would expect.  Did anyone ever use one of these in its originally intended environment, and if so, what was that key's purpose/function and how did it operate?
