what mouse is like the RAT7 but doesn't suck?
« on: Sun, 27 May 2012, 13:43:30 »
Hi all

still trying to find a really good mouse that won't piss me off...  most mice that I have found are way too small for my paws and also tend to have a cord that's too stiff so gets hung up on stuff on my desktop.  I was using a RAT7 for a while and found it fantastic, but one day the sensor just stopped working, and I see online that that is a common issue.  The complete lack of response from tech support didn't improve my mood any (wasn't even a "GFY, we don't sell repair parts" response, it was no response at all) What I liked about that mouse was the heavy weight, the pinky shelf (so awesome!) and the limp cord.  I liked the thumb-scroll-wheel although it was obnoxious that I had to hack some stuff to get it to work at all in Linux.

I've also used recently a Logitech Performance Mouse MX and it's OK.  If I'd never used the RAT7 I would probably like it.  My main quibble with it is that it is less nice to my hand than the RAT7, and also the side scroll functionality sucks ass.  the scroll wheel just feels loose and wobbly, honestly, I prefer the much older little Logitech wireless laptop mice that I have that have a distinct detent when you push the scroll wheel side to side, although in every other way I prefer the PMMX.

So should I buy a PMMX to take to work, or what should I use?  I really miss the RAT but based on it ****ting the bed after only 6 mos. or so of use and the complete lack of customer service that I received (I couldn't warranty it because I bought it off eBay) and from reading online about this not being unusual, I'm hesitant to consider another Mad Catz/Cyborg product.

I really do need to buy something because yet another of my little cordless ones has died, I'm down to my last one, and at my desk at work I am now using a Dell free-with-new-PC deal that I stole from the IT guy, which is actually not horrible, but it isn't appropriate next to my Filco.

thanks for any opinions!

Logitech G9X with weight options and different shells could be an option.  Mine has been reliable.  I use it without any weights though.

Well slap my ass and call me Sally, after I posted that I went downstairs and dug the RAT out of the desk drawer for one last try before tossing it in the trash.  Hoodathunkit; it works now!  Go figure.

So I will take the PMMX to work for now and keep using the RAT at home where a meltdown won't keep me from doing anything that I need to get done to get paid.  But I suspect that I will need another pointing device in the near future anyway; I have lost faith in the RAT much as I love it.  So recommends are still quite welcome; let me know what I should try next.

Edit: you must have been posting while I was typing my reply.  I think the G9X was recommended last time around but I wrote it off because it wasn't cordless.  Is the cord nice and limp like the RAT?

The Corsair M60 has a similar enough design to the RAT, but doesn't have any side-scrolling ability, if that is important to you...

I've had the RAT7 and 9, and also the corsair M60. Currently using the corsair, it has similar aesthetics of the RAT. The scroll wheel of the M60 is the same, but if you press on it like a button, it's a little more stiff. It also doesn't have the pinky rest glider add-on, but I've never used that on the RAT 7 anyways. It just felt too awkward. One huge thing is that the corsair M60 has a much smoother gliding pads, and the sensors are more accurate than the RAT7.

Got a link to this? Sounds like something a lot of people would be interested in.

I'm also waiting for this Thermaltake Level 10 BMW mouse that also looks like a cybrog RAT inspired design.

I'd suggest the G9x, I'm a huge fan of the physical aspects of the RAT7 and it's one of my favourite mice along with the G9x. Never had to get my G9x replaced though.

This looks nice and all, but I'm not a fan of ambidextrous mouse. Our hands are not symmetrical, so having a mouse that is symmetrical will never feel as ergonomic as on specifically designed to fit the right or left hand. I also have a razer lachesis that is an ambidextrous mouse, and it doesn't feel as good as my other ones.

Grab a logi G9, unlike its newer brother the G9x its CHEAP! You can grab one second hand for twenny bucks and it not all that much worse than the 'x'!

I also need a large mouse. I was doing a lot of research before and came across the Kensington Pro Fit USB/PS2 Full Size Wired Mouse.

It was very cheap and I've been using since last December and it's great!
