[help] Tenkeyless Leopold with wasd keycaps
« on: Sat, 16 June 2012, 18:46:10 »
Please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section, this is my first post.

I've been looking around for a while and I'm still trying to find something I feel comfortable with buying. I definitely want brown switches and tenkeyless if possible. I thought the purple ducky shine would be nice because it would fit in with my razer mamba that I've set to purple, but after getting a new mousepad, I can't help but notice that my numpad area is always going on top of my mousepad and I never use it, and tenkeyless keyboards are cute. I'd love a tenkeyless filco with brown switches, but all I've found is the camo one which I'm not really interested in. The only one that I've found with a normal layout is the tenkeyless tactile touch leopold which I wouldn't mind getting.

Having said that, I would like to know if regular cherry mx keycaps would work with it. I'm planning on making something similar to this and I want to make sure I don't end up spending almost $50 on the wrong ones. I plan on getting them from wasdkeyboards.com (unless someone points me somewhere else) and would also like to know the layout if anyone could help me out (I'm assuming it's modern).

Would you guys recommend the leopold or is there something better I can get? Thanks.

Any idea of how fast they sell out? I don't have a credit card so I'd have to transfer money from paypal to my bank and get a prepaid visa to get it from amazon which might take a few days.

They blues and browns should be around for at least  a month... reds... ( if they are in this shipment) would probably sell out in a day.

Okay, good. Same $140 as they are now (for the tenkeyless)? Paypal says a bank transfer will take 3-5 days so I'd like to be ready and take out as much money as I need.

Also, regular cherry mx keycaps fit filcos, right?

Yes to both :)!  Except reds are slightly more pricey and blacks are slightly less.
I still endorse leopolds.  They are a good less pricy keyboard, but no one will question you buying a filco.

I'd go for a leopold if I didn't hear of the spacebar issues with other keycaps. I also prefer the sharper edges of a filco. I'd definitely buy it for convenience if I didn't hear that the filcos were going to be available (just so I don't have to deal with all of the crap with paypal), but I have the money right now so I may as well just wait it out.

Thanks for your help!

I don't have a leopold, but I recommend the CMstorm. Some people don't like all the branding, but I've found that it's not that bothersome to me. Besides that, it's really a quality keyboard made by costar (same OEM as filco). The layout is pretty modern, except for not having a "menu" key, but I never use that anyway. Just my 0.02 of course.

The biggest difficulty with the leopold is the spacebar stabilizers are not the same as most keyboards, so it's harder to find replacements.

That's a pretty good-look for the keycaps. If you want to emulate it, I'd grab some blank or engraved PBT from one of the vendors in this forum (qtan, imsto, and lin, and feng should be able to get you some.)

Leopold spacebar is only for the Fullsize thats not universal I believe. So if you buy the TKL you should be fine.

Honestly, the filco was my first choice but I thought they were discontinued. My original idea was to get a ducky shine and then a cmstorm with red switches, but I thought about it and realized I really don't need a numpad so I should just get a higher priced tkl. I can't stand the grey on the regular quickfire, so I'd only be interested in the red one which I don't really want right now.

I'm still deciding between blank and laser etched keycaps. Since I'm dishing out so much money for the filco (which I realize may not be that much for some of you), I probably won't get them for about a month though so I'll worry about it when I have the money for them.
