cherry mx black

the black is growing on me, even though my wpm has gone from 80-90 on my old rubberdome to 60 on the mx black (though i suspect this is because the key sizes and kb layout is slightly different on the new kb to the one i've been using for 7 years). the thing i like is that gaming does indeed feel nice.

however i don't dig the vague actuation point. it's something like 2mm down of a 4mm key depth, and it makes it very difficult to double tap precisely. it also doesn't give a very immediate/snappy response since the key is so deep and the actuation is only halfway through. this is kind of problematic for fpses, but much more so for stepmania or other precise games.

I want to keep this keyboard, so is there a way to improve precision by, say, sticking 1.5mm orings on the keys to solve my problem?

How long have you had it? It takes awhile to get accustomed to new keyboard, but on linear mx the tension does increase as you approach bottom out. Over time you may start to notice this and/or just get used to the half press with muscle memory.

thanks for the reply.

got the board this week, and yes i think you're right, i'm starting to not bottom out when typing. however i can't help bottoming out in gaming, and the inaccuracy is hurting my ability to press keys multiple times in quick succession, and it's not very comfortable for stepmania either. do you know if 2.5mm would be too thick for an o-ring? the wasd o-rings are 1.5mm thick and cause a 0.4mm travel reduction, so it follows that 2.5mm would reduce keypresses by 1.4mm. Would that be ok, or would that block the actuation point do you think?

I wouldn't even worry about it. I was the same way when I got my first mx board, which was also blacks after coming from domes. I'm now an mx reds user and don't bottom out hardly ever, except maybe when really into a game. Give it 2 weeks to a month and you will most likely be used to it and back up to a comfortable level in accuracy and speed. If you're still not getting it, maybe blacks are not the best switch for you.

No, not much. I probably do a bit when action gets really heated but otherwise I have just gotten used to how MX linear switch feels. I can feel spring feedback getting stronger, and I know when I reached the actuation point. It just takes some time to become accustomed to it. Until then I wouldn't worry about bottoming. Avoiding bottoming is easier on the fingers but it's not that big of a deal if you do in my opinion.
