I definitely want to try a Tipro matrix sometime. I wonder how much shipping that to the US will cost. Then again, I'm still waiting for (now) over $4,000 in paychecks, so I'll have to hope it sticks around.

A tipro matrix keyboard is about 1kg if I recall correctly, consider something on the line of 2kg, that should help you to determine the shipping costs and hopefully you will not pay as much. The one shown here has a PS2 connection, make sure you have a 32 bit windows or you won't be able to program it.

I'm currently typing on one (a more recent model but same layout), and have to tell it's a pleasure. To know you can program the layout as much as you want, and on 4 layers is awesome ! The board in itself is very solid as well, and provides all the necessary keys and more while remaining compact. Amazing board for an amazing price. The software (changeme) is free and is really easy to use. Look for the topic "programming a tipro on the fly" at deskthority to find some useful info about it.

But keep in mind several things if you want to go ahead :
- You will need to get used to it. A matrix layout is nothing as a usual keyboard in terms of key placement. You will make mistakes from muscle memory for sure at the beginning.
- The board comes with cherry blacks. Get prepared to mod it if you don't like them. It's plate mounted, so desoldering is required.
- If you wish to change the caps, you will need to find mostly 1*1 caps but certainly a few 1*2 caps with 2 mounts. These are almost non existent in the market, grab some at GB round 4 (deskthority) while you can.

The other thing to look out for is that POS keyboards often come with detachable cables.  It's always worth checking if the cable is included - if you can't see it in the photo's - ask!

I have been considering trying a Tipro out. Mostly for the matrix layout and the programmability.

Any warnings or recommendations on boards to go for if i should so choose ?

Don't get the mid-sized one. The are to big to be used as numpads and too large to be used as a keyboard. I got a 96 switch one (12x8) which falls inbetween the two. It sucks.

This 128 key one is probably a lot better. Also, I believe you need a 32bit OS to program them.

Even if you get a 96 key matrix, you can still extend it by connecting other modules. But to be honest it will take both space and money, so better go directly for a 128 key one indeed.

There are two models you may find : the MID ones (as shown in this auction) are older, PS/2, white. Their bottom shape is rounded, and the back side is a metal plate from what I've heard. The more recent ones (TM model) as the one I own are anthracite gray, have a sharper bottom which is a bit elevated from ground (most probably less comfortable for typing than the MID ones), and the back side is designed so you can arrange your cable very nicely. They can have either PS/2 or USB connection, but USB ones are rare and usually way more expensive when they show up.
