Xbox and how stickers can void your warranty

Read end of this post and post #11 for summary.

So I recently sent in my xbox from 2007 for its THIRD repair (we all know how reliable these things are right?). They recently emailed me saying they WILL NOT repair it and has flagged my console as TAMPERED with. It worked fine except for overheating all the time (2 red lights).

edit; Turns out they really dont like putting stickers on your console and taking them off. The best solution they could come up with for "security" reasons were the decorative stickers i put put on the top (when laying flat). Ridiculous to void a service contract of 5 years over STICKERS, or what they called "frymarks" from removing said stickers...? their technicians leave literally 0 notes.

I have one thanks. I am a gamer all over I own many consoles and PCs, they don't realize how much money I still have to give them.

Meh, mistakes happen.

I wouldn't judge a compagny over such a thing.

Sure it's upsetting, but heh.

Consider the number of xboxs M$ selled. It's no wonder a lot of the user complain. You just happened to be one of the few unlucky one.

You probably remember when some company (was it Google?) started with the slogan "Don't Be Evil"?

Under that scenario, Microsoft and Apple have got to be 2 of the most "evil" companies on the planet, and I am afraid that Google may be following in their footsteps.

I would love to break out of Microsoft's grip (my wife is the religious type so she worships Apple) but without a viable database and CAD system, Linux just is not ready for prime time.

My experiments with Ubuntu over the past few years have been generally pleasant and encouraging, but as long as people support the monster monopoly it will continue to thrive.

I just wish that Windows 7, which has been generally excellent, so far, was not riddled with the annoyance of useful features (Explorer!) having been stripped away or made lame.

I would request Microsoft to provide evidence of this supposed "tampering". And get in writing if their "tamper mechanism" is ever touched or modified by a technician. Then be very clear that you did not tamper or modify your system as that would have invalidated the service contract that you paid for.

Also be clear that if they refuse to honor your previous service agreement you'll have no choice but to seek legal action against them.

Not to say that you will seek action, but you definitely have grounds based on your info.

So a network tamper would be an external tamper I guess eh? kinda dumb but live and learn. Anyone know if GameStop buys "flagged" consoles like that? haha because MS said they would also still repair it for a fee... but that box is super loud anyways. Being on its 3rd repair it should be  LEMON it only survives because of the cool Washington climate.

No reason to use an x-box when pc has all the same games (besides halo) but can run faster and don't need constant repairs. Plus you don't have to pay for the online service of choice from the monster monopoly.

Yeah I hear you. Problem is NONE of my friends have good PCs they have xboxes... and I have A LOT invested into the current gen of consoles. Im mostly talking about the DLC and other stuff ive paid for on my XB HDD that I cant re-sell. Or I probably would.

I can get another xbox for $130 or less or send what should be considered a lemon of a console repaired for $99 with the chance of them sending a refurb. That price of $130 is like not even a good gpu for pc right? lol, the appeal of consoles. I know where youre coming from man and know most of the benefits and downfalls of each platform.

What is wrong with your xbox? I work at a repair shop that fixes xbox's and other things. I might be able to give you a good deal ;D

2 red lights overheating. to the best of my knowledge; it is an OG 120gb elite 'zephyr' mobo with improved heat sink, fan shroud prob, and jacked up fan speed im assuming. It's 5 years old, isnt the paper thin mobo warping by now?

It STILL overheats. its had a new disc drive put in and all the other "improvements" & repairs all by microsoft. I put on and removed a 5 x 4" sticker on top using my fingernail and apparently they think i tried to pry into it? (the damage THEIR technicians caused to my main intake vent over a year ago isnt helping my case).

Honestly I just want to be done with this box (old,outdated, hot, & loud) and feel it is their responsibility to at LEAST get me a refurbished 'old style' yet still newer box, I paid my warranty for 4 additional years and apparently voided by STICKERS, decorative stickers that I removed later.  NEVER PUT STICKER ON YOUR XBOX the technicians apparently dont like it. (I DO NOT WANT THIS BOX, if at all possible, they couldnt even tell me if the MAC is banned or not) [its still in the mail, on its way back]

options now are; in order of price

a. pay $99 dollars for a M$ repair, hope the look over Janice's notes from today about my stickers etc., and hope for a refurb? will they? the console is "flagged" so you would think?
b. buy a gamestop refurb for $120 (optional $15? extended warranty), hope they will take my "repairable" box as a trade
c. NEW MSRP 4GB and hope for a used HDD? Ugh.. old HDD...  $15 transfer cable
d. NEW MSRP 250gb (AGAIN *bangs head on wall*) $15 transfer cable

I will not swap HDD caddies because I play by the rules and they say that can result in account banning or console banning (on a new msrp console no thank you) I think they could come up with some way of detecting older gen HDD's in new boxes. I want no chances, as legit as possible HERE. ANOTHER reason im so ______ pissed off.

My 120gb has like 21 gb remaining and that IS ALL game content. I've been so screwed over. What do I have to do put in a letter with my xboxc explaining every ding and repair on a 5 year old xbox, + what they've done to it? (she asked me "WHAT RECORDS?" LMFAO when i asked about the previous repairs), Hope and pray the technician believes me and has sympathy?

This thing is a LEMON. & flagged? yet they say they will still repair it? it just doesn't add up and all over a MISTAKE & decorative stickers!

Send it to me and pay the shipping, and I'll fix it for $40 or maybe some sort of trade. I have a pretty permanent fix for it. I can also step down the fan speed and add a cooling fan that pushes a ton of air right onto the heatsink. It should blow out room temp air no matter how long you play :D

OK but if its console-banned off XBL there's no point? I dont know if I want to risk using a modded console... as I've said I have a lot into my GT.

I don't think Squirrel means modding your HDD, if it's just a fan mod I doubt it will blacklist your console from XBL.

Is that a console you personally did? because cutting that circle into the case seems like it would be difficult....

They sell large hole saws that cut perfect circles. This is 100 times easier on plastic then metal.
