Having used a worn out Model M before, I can assure you that getting a NIB one is worth it.

Well, prices can't be universally getting that bad as I just picked up an M last week in a retail box for only $18.50 plus a little less for shipping. Somehow lucked across it before anybody else saw it.

It's my first NIB M and I'm looking forward to comparing it to the more vintage, well-used ones I already had.

I think I just topped my NIB Model M find.

Discovered an Olympia SG-1 in very good condition at my local recycler and talked them down to only $20. It's the "buckling-beam board" of manual typewriters

If anyone here's considering getting a Unicomp, they should consider that NIB industrial Model M first.

A Model M, especially one that's new now, can last for easily two decades if taken care of.

Yep, consider the $200 board over the $70 keyboard even though they will feel the same.

Has some conclusive proof on this matter been established yet? Or is it just more conjecture for the conjecture-fest?

I think the biggest problem is that there isn't enough competition in the segment of the market we are interested in.  There isn't enough manufacturers making quality keyboards, our access to those manufacturers is limited at best, and some specific items are specialized.  For example, I can buy a Cherry-based 'board from Filco, Cherry, i-Rocks, etc., but I can only buy a Topre from Topre or PFU (via Topre) and I can only get BS from Unicomp.

I've tried a blue label 1391406 and a Unicomp. The IBM has a good bit of wear on the keys you'd expect to be used the most, but some of the keys (particularly function ones) are definitely much more sharp in terms of tactility compared with the Unicomp (there are no plastic rivets broken on either). The IBM is also consistently stiffer, across both the worn keys and the unworn ones. This seems to be in line with the reports of many who have compared the two side by side. Unless some Model Ms get better with wear, I'm sticking to my position here that there is definitely a difference.

if you think the video card thing is a downside for MW2 on PC you must not know about the:
- $60 price tag
- lack of dedicated servers
- inability to mod the game in multiplayer
- 9v9 multiplayer limit
- 5hr single player

im very very pissed right now.  auction for a model m with only one bid at $6 ended in 2.5hrs.  thats okay, i NEVER play mass effect for more than about 1 hour before a break.  WHOOPS!  not this time!  had to miss it THIS TIME!

auction ended at $6.  and this one looked really clean.
