IBM Model M questions
« on: Sat, 04 August 2012, 05:35:34 »
I've read from somewhere that the best IBM Model M's are late 80s models.

So.. 87,88,89...

Are there huge differences between these three?

Thank you :)

The 1390131 model has the square aluminum badge that many people prefer. (the 1390120 has it too, but lacks the LED panel so it is less desirable)

Somewhere about early 1989 they changed from stabilizer wires on the larger keys to the plastic insert sleeves (the spacebar kept its wire, of course) and sometime around then, or earlier, they made the metal plate lighter. The earliest plates were shiny and yellowish, later they were dull and gray.

In the early 1990s, the plates got even lighter. I like old stuff, but it really doesn't make much difference. I would suggest that a novice buy a new Unicomp with the USB plug and get into vintage stuff on a hobby basis.

You could also buy a 1390120 for cheap and swap its plate into a newer chassis when doing a bolt mod.

I have never convinced myself that stabilizer wires are better than the barrel inserts, either.

“No political truth is of greater intrinsic value, or is stamped with the authority of more enlightened patrons of liberty: The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands .… may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” —James Madison, Federalist 47
“All the powers of government, legislative, executive, and judiciary, result to the legislative body. The concentrating of these in the same hands, is precisely the definition of despotic government. An ELECTIVE DESPOTISM was not the government we fought for; but one .... in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among several bodies of magistracy, as that no one could transcend their legal limits, without being effectually checked and restrained by the others.” — Thomas Jefferson, commentary on Federalist 48

+1
Most of the time, the earlier the Model M the heavier it is.
