camera equipment/photokina rumor mill
« on: Sun, 05 August 2012, 21:08:06 »
nikon d600: imminent? summary: 24mpix d700-equivalent but in a d90 body form factor  :o

projected price: 15-1700$

it will probably lose the AI-S metering capability (that stupid little swingarm needs to go imo), but will _not_ lose the focus motor.

i love my d700, but i wouldn't mind shaving a pound off of it :D

i have a big enough investment in nikon gear that i try not to look at the other camp too often, but feel free to discuss the rumor mill for canon-land here! i think i read something on CR about a super high res 5dmk3 or 1d?

Going for the t3i/t4i for my first camera, what do you think? Is this good for a NOOB?

if you need to buy now, get a d3100 "factory demo" off of cameta on ebay with the two kit lenses. cheap and competent.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for the D600, although I'd be disappointed if they removed any backwards compatibility with the old AI-S lenses. Part of the beauty of Nikon compared to Canon (NOT trying to brand bash, I think CA and NI are 98% equivalent, but this is maybe the one area in which they truly differ) is full compatibility with legacy lenses. This is especially important for the full-frame cameras, on which the old film lenses have the field of view they were designed for.

eh, i've had more than my share of ai-s lenses at this point, and while they're fantastic lenses, nik is finally starting to replace them with better lenses for about the same price. my new 85/1.8g and 35/1.4g outperform the older equivalents by leaps and bounds and are actually lighter. they do cost a bit more, but the convenience, performance, availability, etc. make them worth it. at this point i would happily buy a full-frame d40/60/3000.
