Help me choose a mouse pad
« on: Sat, 25 August 2012, 10:01:06 »
Just got in the mail today a SteelSeries 4HD... wanted something nicer and less likely to get perma-mungy than the typical cloth pads that you tend to get for free at trade shows etc.

Difficulty: my RAT7 WILL NOT TRACK on it.  Pointer does not move at all.  Put a piece of paper over it and everything is fine.

I do like the hard pad and the way it glides.

Suggestions?

(the SS will probably go to work, unless it won't work with my PMMX either, in which case then I'll have wasted $20 or so.)

I was hoping to get something hard that wouldn't pick up mung however...  so cloth is out

I'm seriously considering taking a piece of glass or masonite and running over to Big Lots and getting some contact paper and making my own "hard mouse pad" tell me why I shouldn't do this?

Because then Razer doesn't make money on you... HAH! You have a good idea, do it.

My recommendation is the Artisan Shidenkai - Combination of a hard mousepad and a cloth mousepad, best of both worlds:

I have one (medium version, also currently own puretrak talent, goliathus speed and artisan hien mid, previously owned/used steelseries 9hd and Razer destructor).

Here's a review link:

Cheers.

well, I did it... got some clear contact paper, and I already had a 2x4 sheet of Masonite laying around for another project (fixing an old Dual 1019 turntable base)

just cut about 16" off the end, because my the desk I'm using the keyboard tray is a hair under 25" wide, wrapped that with the contact paper (actually some off brand) and cut a piece of shelf liner to go between the Masonite and the desk.  Looks OK, feels great BUT tracking is awful... it works, but not well.  Back to the drawing board, or more correctly, using sheets of printer paper for my mouse pad... maybe I should go to a real store and get some "real" contact paper maybe in black this time... OR... I wonder if vinyl would work?  I have some sheet vinyl laying around from recovering the sound bar on my Jeep..?  don't think it would glide nicely though.

Edit: I think it is just that this mouse sucks.  I'm starting to see why I thought it'd died on me a while back...  After using it on my new "mouse pad" for a while, it just stopped moving the cursor altogether, I guess it just gave up trying to track.  So maybe due to wear or something my mouse pad at work became untrackable to it, but it worked OK at home...  Unfortunately I've yet to find anything that it'll track well on, save for a sheet of paper.  A little disappointing for such a comfortable, well shaped mouse.

Yeah one of my friend has a R.A.T.9 eh says the sensor is very picky on surface, so yeah in that respect yes the mouse sucks lol.  Try a different colour surface, some mice track better on dark surface some track better on light surface.  Since you want hardpad, maybe try Razer Scarab it's grey so maybe it will work better :P

I've only tried a few mouse pads myself but after a couple of them I really liked a rocketfish mouse made by best buy.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153%3B+-+Gaming+Mouse+Pad/2494238.p?id=1218330801441&skuId=2494238&st=mouse%20pad&cp=1&lp=2

It's been awesome for me for the past 3 years. It's double-sided, solid not flexible, and it has rubber feet so it won't move.  And, it's only $18.

Well i got a mionix naos in the mail today and it works fantastic on my masonite and contact paper "mouse pad" - and my PMMX works great on the steelseries pad.  So I guess I am retiring the rat although I will miss side scroll...

you have to ask other rat owners what mousepad works with the rat, sensor is too garbage/picky/finicky.
fwiw, i tried and returned a horrible rat7 a year ago, i had to buy a steel series steel pad to work(my icemat glass mats did not)
