Not enough power for my Model M?
« on: Wed, 12 September 2012, 10:46:02 »
Hi!

I recorded a quick video with semi-bad english that explains my problem:

Please excuse the video orientation, it was hard to film while connecting the Model M.

I need any help I can get and is grateful for any pointers :)

I have seen this many times with my own model M.  As far as I know the reason behind the failure is lack of power.  However, I always can get mine working if I reboot my computer a few times and wait for it to flash a different LED combo.  But then again, you're on a Mac, so it's hard to tell if it is the same problem or not...

Hope this helps a little!

Thanks, guess I'll try rebooting a few times before going on a hunt for a blue cube :)

Either way, you still might want to get a blue cube adapter, because this problem will return almost every time you shut down your computer, and it does get annoying.

Apple is more likely to adhere to the actual standard than anyone else.  Which is to say you get 100ma until your device enumerates and requests more.  Too many devices don't bother with that step and need more than 100ma right off the bat.

That said, I don't know that I'm right, I've never owned an Apple product.

Restarted and it's working fine, typing this on the Model M :) I'll be crossing my fingers that it won't just be temporary and keeping my Apple Aluminium Keyboard close at hand for when it does stop working

I was just playing an FPS to test it out, and when I pressed too many keys (I think...) my character would simply stop moving. Is this too old a keyboard to handle multiple input?

Model Ms are only 2KRO.  You will want a keyboard with 6KRO or better for playing a FPS.

Ah, looked it up, and it looks like it's better to keep my Apple Keyboard near for just such occasions. Thanks!

Yeah, Model Ms don't make the best gaming keyboards... they are great typing keyboards though!

I had an issue with one of my adaptors where pressing keys too fast would make it lock up and restart. It only took a few seconds, but got me killed often enough. Look into another adapter, I'm building a soarer one, myself.
