I got Roku for my parents, they freakin loved it.  All it needs is an internet connections, but you will want to have some kind of external subscription to make it worth your while.  They use it almost exclusively to stream Netflix, so they need a Netflix account.  It also features some free sources and it can read MP4 movies from a USB.

There's no subscription to roku needed, but for the services it packages (netflix/hulu/amazon etc) you do.

It's an awesome device, we have two in our house now or I'd grab it.

It has wireless built-in but you can also plug in a lan cable. It has HDMI out. I have one at home. Just switch my TV over to Roku HDMI in and there it is - ready to go. Great if you have Netflix.

Can it navigate file-systems or does it need something like VLC or windows media center to work on lan?

It can't browse windows shares.  As far as I know, it doesn't support WMC either.  I don't know if it supports any other other streaming technologies.

But dude, google it for cripes sake!!!

If you have a ps3 or xbox 360, ps3 media server is a good choice.  Here's a list of all supported devices - http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&p=16952#p16952

Download to pc, boot from pc, all should be visible from streaming device from there as long as they share a network.

I can vouch for ps3 media server, I use it every day. My only complaint about it is installing it as a service didn't work for me, and every once in a while I'll get settled in on the couch only to realize it isn't running and i need to get up again.

As for the roku, it's a good device, but lack of local fileshare access is a dealbreaker for me.

I think that's more hbo to blame than directv considering you have to have hboGo to watch HBO on demand and to have hbogo you have to have a subscription to hbo.

/grumbles about trying to apply 1980s cable theory to 2010s tv watching

nope, it's all on directv.

hbo is fine with it being on anything.. as long as you have a subscription through your tv provider.
