about switching MX switches
« on: Sat, 13 October 2012, 08:05:28 »
so,

i read alot about switching PCB mounted MX with desoldering and stuff...
since i dont know how to switch plate mounted switches i just wanted to ask
whether its possible to simply open the mounted switch and change the inside
and top of my black switches with blues?

i guess its not as easy as that as i suppose there is something important on the
inside of the bottom cap part but i will ask anyways.

Plate mount must be desoldered, in which case it's better to just have complete switches so you can just solder them right in when changing types. The plate blocks the latching tabs on the top of the switch housing from release.
Only on pcb mount can you just open the housing and change the internals.

I was able to push the plate down out of the way on a board once, giving me access to the switches to open them, but it's really difficult and bad things could easily happen so I don't advise it.

well i got no switches yet anyways but i might give it a try eventho my soldering skills
are nonexistent;).

thx for the clarification.

I just swapped switches for someone a few days ago, and I made a video of the whole process in detail. It's not hard to do, but extremely tedious. At least 4 hours would be my guess. I'll upload the video on youtube maybe in a few days.

Dude, it's relaxing.  Like knitting for geeks.  :)
