Price of rare keycaps
« on: Tue, 06 November 2012, 20:13:29 »
I'm admittedly new here but I don't see how anybody can justify spending more than $50 on a keycap at the most.

This has probably been posted a billion times but I'm curious, how do you guys justify spending so much on a SINGLE keycap? I'm already feeling wasteful/guilty about my full custom WASD set I'm working on and that should come out to about $60!

Why did people spend so much money on POG's or Magic The Gathering cards? Many factors such as; rarity, difficulty in obtaining, perceived value, etc.

This can be applied to any number of things in the world, with the exact same reasoning.

Heh so we can say to people "This single keycap cost more than your whole keyboard".  :)) :p
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I knew I guy with a Beta Black Lotus back in the day.  He ripped me off in a trade, but I needed whatever the hell it was he had, and that was the last time I spoke to that goober!  Damn nerds!

I'm mostly curious if they're desired because the buyer actually wants it regardless of the price, or if its become a sort of a status thing.

What inspired me to post this was that recent post about the 100somethingdollar red white and blue click clack in the classifieds. I personally don't see the appeal in the clickclacks and was going to post "who the hell is paying this much for a keycap", but I decided that might be a bit rude in someones classified thread.

... did you say... POGs... like actual POGs?  My god man, it cannot be.  The only thing they're good for is propping up the wobbly table.

A SET of keycaps - $60+ is about right.

A SINGLE keycap - $60+ for a CC skull, for example.

Disposable income is disposable, I guess.  I could never justify that much money against my current income.

Well, apparently you haven't seen how insane the prices of collectible toys can go.

I collect hot wheels as a hobby but pieces such as this one easily go over USD$300 everytime.

Another one that hits USD$130+ easily:

I doubt I will ever justify spending that much. All I can do pray that I someday will get a piece of equal value to trade.
