P key isn't working right
« on: Wed, 07 November 2012, 08:03:05 »
Hey guys. I have a QuickFire Rapid with browns, and the P key is only working sporadically. Is there anything I can do to look at the switch myself before doing an RMA? Obviously I popped off the key cap and looked at it, and it looks fine and feels just like the others. It will periodically work (it's working fine now). When it doesn't work, I have to push the key repeatedly, or push it all the way down and wiggle it around until it registers. But, right now, it's working fine again with normal keypresses. Very odd problem.

Let me know if there is anything I can do myself as I really don't want to RMA it, because it just went out of the 30 day return policy with Newegg and my only options are to return it to Coolermaster directly (which is a pain in the rear).

Thanks.

Sounds like something is wrong with the switch. Try taking the keycap off and pushing the stem down enough so there is a visible gap between the stem and the switch casing and shoot some canned air in there. If this doesn't work, I would RMA it because any other option will likely void your warranty.

Yeah, I already started the RMA process and am at the final steps of just getting it all together to ship. I just think it's weird that the switch works fine right now. ppppppppppppppppppppppppp! :P I pressed it really fast repeatedly and it skipped one time out of all those. Other times it won't work at all, and I have to push it all the way down and wiggle it around before it will register.

I'll try the compressed air in there and see how it goes.

It seems to be working better after doing that. I messed with it a lot and so far no issues. It's a "time will tell" thing though. I think it's weird that all the other keys work great and that one has been the only issue.

It did that the first day I got it also. The P key stopped working for a minute, and I plugged it in again and it worked. I think it was just coincidence though, because I didn't unplug/replug this time and it just started working again magically.

Hopefully there was dust in a contact or something... but I don't know how mechanical switches look internally, so for all I know there is no contact there to get dust on/into. ;)

Anyway... pppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp! pppppppppp! ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp! All good. :P Hopefully it'll stay that way. At least I have months to replace it if it doesn't work later since I've registered it with Cooler Master's site now. 11 months to go! Ha!
