Kinesis Advantage MX Brown, first impressions
« on: Fri, 14 December 2012, 07:25:33 »
Got my Advantage this morning, trying to get used to it. Posted some pics on another thread. Got it with blank keys, because I use Colemak. Right now, it's a pretty tough slog. I make about one typo per word, and fixing it is usually a matter of trial and error (hunting around adjacent keys until I hit the right one). So basically, typing this is taking forever.

That said, the keyboard feels good. It's well-built yet lightweight, which is a plus for me since I work with it on my lap. I'm pretty happy I went with MX Brown in the end. The keys offer crunchy, satisfying tactile feedback.

It's a good thing my touch typing habits were reasonable to begin with, because the Advantage seems to be very particular about which keys you're supposed to hit with which fingers. For example, I keep trying to hit C with my left ring finger and hitting X instead (ZXCV are the same positions in Colemak as in QWERTY). The "right" finger for C seems to be the middle finger.

I'm glad the keyboard arrived on a Friday because I have the weekend to get some practice. It's actually pretty tiring - reminds me of my slow Colemak studies. I hope I won't take too long to get up to speed. Actually, my speed improved a little bit since I started writing this message 20 minutes ago. (Yes, this took around 20 minutes to type, maybe a bit longer. Remember, I can't hunt-and-peck because there's nothing to see on the keyboard.)

In terms of remappings, I'm trying to keep things simple and not make too many changes this early in the game. For now, I only swapped Tab and Delete, because Alt-Tab was close to impossible.

Okay, I guess I'll submit this now and go look for something else to painstakingly type. Have a nice weekend, geeks.

Congrats!  I know when I got mine, I was trying to cold-turkey to Colemak at the same time.  The board itself felt pretty natural after a day of use with qwerty, but never could adjust to Colemak.  I do regret getting rid of it now though, but had to make room for other projects.

Good luck with your practice! :)

how is the noise level compared to a typical plate mounted board?

Good question... For now, it's actually not loud at all. I'm still learning my way around the keyboard, so I'm typing quite softly and slowly. I imagine that if I manage to stick with it and get to a reasonable level of typing, it will be a bit louder than my previous board (MS 4000), but not so much that it'll become a problem. Generally, I can say that noise is less of an issue than I expected it to be.

You will get use to it very fast.
I took around 1 week to gain half of my typing speed ( qwerty) and another 2 weeks to gain back to full speed. I not a fast typist and I not even a True touchtype person when I got the kinesis.
But now I can say I am ~ 90% touch-type person. Still no confident to goes blank keycaps. :D

For noise, I damper them with O-rings. I putting double o-ring on some keycap on my thumb area especially Enter, Space and BackSpace. I also keymap Shift  key to Left thumbs.
