Does such a keyboard exist?
« on: Thu, 20 December 2012, 19:13:17 »
Hi GEEKHACK!

I am looking for a keyboard with:
• Cherry MX Red switches
• PBT die sublimated keycaps
• Tenkeyless (or if not, then 104key)

Does such a keyboard exist off-the-shelf?

Background:
I currently have a HHKB 2. I love the lightness of the 45g Torpre switches and love the feel of the PBT die sublimated keycaps, but I am not sure if I am keen on the tactile bump of the topre switch. So, I want to try the cherry red mx, but don't want PBT lazer etched, or ABS double shot, only die sublimated will do  ;)

Cheers for any input.  :)
V.

Here the only one I know of that has stock PBT caps, but they are not dye sublimated: http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=186

Otherwise you could buy a Filco TKL of CM Storm QFR and replace the caps with dye subbed caps like IMSTO's sets.

No.  Keyboards these days don't ship with quality keycaps.  You must buy them separately.

Vortex makes separate dye sublimated PBT keycap sets as well as offer TKL MX Red options.

The Deck 82 keyboard is sub TKL and has dye sublimated backlit flat PBT keycaps. But only in MX Black (although their warranty is mod friendly).

mechanicalkeyboards.com has keyboards that have PBT caps, and cherry red switches, and in TKL layout. Dyesub you're pushing your luck... Can't be too picky with stock keyboards. I recommend you enter Feng's Vortex group buy though if you want thick dyesub PBT... only problem is they're all in itallics. IF you consider that a problem.

Leopold 700r is pretty close.  Reds, PBT Keycaps, TKL...PBT space bar.....It is supposed to be lasered but I don't think they are...

Thanks for the replies!

So it seems I will just buy a keyboard and then get some dyesub keycaps from IMSTO.

So the question now is, if the switches are all the same and the keycaps will be replaced which of these would be the best build quality? (price difference negligible, so not a factor):

1. Ducky DK9087G2 PRO
2. Filco Majestouch 2 TKL
3. CM Storm quick fire rapid
4. Vortex KBT Race
5. Leopold FC700R

Cheers.

@Vampiah

CEO of Leopold suffers from Severe Acute Spacebar Psychosis so u can't "just replace" the Leopold spacebar.  You will have to check very carefully if u can replace it or not.

You don't want to get a imsto rainbow keycap set and be stuck with that big black spacebar.  Ditto for a zillion other color-coordinated keycap sets.

I don't know anything about Ducky or Vortex.

If you stick with WASD, Filco, CM, Rosewill, CoolerMaster they use standard spacebars for sure.  Any imsto keycap set will work 100% with those keyboards.

Good luck.

@TotalChaos. Thanks for info, seems I am narrowing down my search nicely! :)

Because the Filco uses Filco/Costar stabilisers, rather than Cherry OEM ones, is it more difficult to change the large keycaps?

And IMSTO keycaps work with either stabilisers correct?

The Leopold uses a different space bar but you're seeing more and more stuff coming out to fit it...It is also not very "pingy" so you don't really get keys that ping..or you will get very few compared to most mechanicals (Filcos ping a lot for example).

A lot of people on here swear by Costar stabilizers but others like Cherry..There isn't one right answer...

If you plan on adding o-rings, I'd probably go w/ Cherry Stabilizers..if you're not, you will probably prefer the Costar.

For those recommending mechanicalkeyboards.com and WASD, it will cost around $50-$60 for the poster to get the keyboard sent to them from there ;) And I am unsure that anyone in Australia even stocks Rosewill.

I do plan on adding o-rings, why do you say those would go better with Cherry Stabilizers? Is there any reason o-rings won't fit onto the Costar stabilizers?

Also noticed that Cherry Stabilizers are only found on Cherry Keyboards and Ducky Keyboards, everything else seems to have Costar ones.  So if I don't want a Ducky, then I don't have an option but to buy a board with Costar stabilizers.

For one because it'll be easier to take the keys off...but even beyond that...

With O-rings the keys will feel similar to keys with cherry stabilizers...so the whole argument for Costar gets thrown out the window IMO...Some might not say that is the case but I definitely think so...

I have a Rosewill which allegedly has costar stabilizers.  I just installed O-rings a few minutes ago.  I have really severe handpain due to an accident with rubberdome keyboard.  :-[

If I can get my O-rings on my keyboard without dying then anybody can.  :p

Ok, so Australia doesn't directly sell Rosewill keyboards.

I think the average regular person does not care what stabilizers they have.

I am really into keyboards and I don't care about stabilizers.  Maybe I will in the future.  I have only been a keyboard maniac for 51 days.

Right now all I care about are things like, what kind of keyswitches does it use, do all the keys work, how soft and beautiful is it to type on it, price, PS/2, if the switches can be lubed or not, what the keycaps look like, color and font.

I'm not sure why anyone cares about PS2...it is one of those things that make such a minute difference, it is a non issue...

Yeah ps2 isn't a concern for me personally, but I can see how it could be for some people. In fact I don't even think my motherboard has a ps2 input.

So I think I will get the Filco Majestouch 2 TKL, with some IMSTO die sub key caps and some o rings.

Thanks for all the input everyone! Great community here. :-)

Hmm now just to track down two candy corn cc for my hhkb and new Filco. ;-)

The Ducky G2 Pro is also  PBT, Lasered, TKL...and standard keys....

Dye subbed can be nice because you can variety but if you're just worried about longevity the lasered ones are just as good...

The only other thing is using  Cherry Profile Key caps (I think IMSTO's dye subbed ones are cherry) is o-rings will make the travel even less than what you normally have on OEM.  This may not be exactly what you're looking for.

Not to mention that some of the G2 PRO keyboards have side lasered, filled legends on PBT which will last forever. Not sure if those are exclusive to limited editions ones such as the MX Green G2 Pro, but the MX Grey keyboard should be incoming stateside soon.
