Cherry MX Greens
« on: Fri, 21 December 2012, 16:35:13 »
I'm interested in where I can buy Cherry MX Greens. I'm thinking about making a Phantom a summer project, and I want Greens just so I know it's unique (you know, besides the whole "I built it with my own 2 hands" thing :P ) and I can't really find them anywhere. I think I have the part number I want (MX1A-F1NN) but I can't find them anywhere. And before anyone says something like "You can mod Blues with a different spring to get the same feeling", Yes I know. However, legitimate Greens are somewhat rare and I would much prefer those for the reasons stated above.

Anyone know where I can find Plate mounted Greens in decently large numbers (IE Enough for a tenkeyless 1.5x modifier keyboard)?

There is a revolving group buy at Deskthority for both PCB-mounted and plate mounted MX switches:

EDIT: D'oh, 10 seconds too late...
;D

PS. MX Greens are awesome to type on.

Indeed.  Typing on my Ducky DK9008G2 Pro LE right now and LOVING it.  It's my daily driver at work, and I really can't stress how much I'm loving the upgrade from blues.

Wow. 5 Replies in 12 minutes! Thanks for the response. The Desktority Page says that he/she/it will get MX1A-F1NNs in within the month, which is perfect!

You will enjoy greens if you have been using blues. I use them at work as well. It is nice there where I am doing more burst of typing, and when I get home and type on some blues you feel like your flying. I do type a bit slower on greens, but since I have started using them my speed on other switches has gone up.

I've noticed the same thing.  I use browns at home.  My typing speed (and accuracy) has increased since switching to greens as my main switch at work.

I personally use Browns (Still a bit of a newbie to this whole mechanical keyboard thing, I only have one XD ) but I notice the same thing when going from my laptop keyboard (Which I really like, I don't find anything at all wrong with it. It's an HP 4320s Probook) to my Mech at home. I'm going for greens because I want something unique, I haven't tried blues, and they are heavier.
I kinda figure the heavier switches akin (prepare for an oxymoron) to a crisp rubber-dome/membrane: Heavy, but crisp. My family might get a bit tired of the click-clack, but with a dedicated computer room, I don't think there'll be too much complaint. I also think that I'll bottom out a lot less on the Greens. I currently consistently bottom out on my browns (I love them, don't get me wrong), so I think that should change when I'm typing. Gaming, not so much, but I really should try to bottom out less to help my speed. I can get 60-90 WPM when i'm copying something (obviously less when i'm typing something like this because I have to think about what i'm going to type), and i might be able to squeeze about 10 more out when i don't bottom out.

You are absolutely right. With MX Blues I can't help but bottom out because the spring provides too little resistance from my hands. MX Greens however are very difficult to bottom out, which will result in less noise when typing. Greens are IMHO difficult to use when gaming (sustaining keys will wear your fingers out) but provide the most pleasant typing experience I've had so far. That and the extra resistance will help one's typing accuracy.

I completely understand with the Gaming thing. I'm planning on having both keyboards on-hand and on a single USB connection, so I can hotswap as required. I should probably get a better typing keyboard for my desktop (My laptop's built-in is actually not half bad, it's a bit stiff, yes, but it has a nice tactile feedback and it's not as mushy as other membranes can get. I'm actually typing on it right now.)

I'm also thinking of designing a crappy logo in Photoshop to stick on there  :p

Right now I have my Ducky MX Green connected with a USB to PS/2 adapter I found at work, with my Noppoo Choc Mini MX Blue through USB (has the USB hack for NKRO over USB). I like my setup a lot and can't wait til my next programming contract kicks in to use the MX Greens a lot more. That and I have a few keyboards on the way to me in the near future... I'm finding that a lot of special interests (cigars, shaving equipment, keyboards) these days end up in acquisitions well beyond one's original intentions. Oh well.
