Here is the styrofoam packing.  :)

Fresh from the box!

A blank inserted where the IBM logo used to go.

Note the date.  Apparently assembled to order.  (this is the date I spoke with Unicomp on the phone!)

I originally thought this was a spring or something.  Turns out, it was a plastic shaving.  (see next pic)

I'm  a VERY happy camper.  This made my day.

I wouldn't mind adding a real buckling-spring keyboard to my collection. Are you generally happy with the injection moulding quality of the key caps?

I am quite happy with them.  They feel just fine.  This IS a Model M.  So, if you're ever typed on one in good condition...that is exactly what this one is like.

I'm debating whether I am going to go through with dying this keyboard.  That was my original plan...but that was when I was going to be doing so on a 20 year old keyboard.  This is brand new!

I going to see if it is possible to get a few more of these.  When you consider how much the old ones are going for on Ebay, at clickykeyboards.com, etc...the $59 price is ridiculously cheap!

The scroll lock does double duty as a numlock key [activated via shift-scroll lock].

I did not know about that, is it standard or specific to that keyboard?

All I know is that that is standard for the Model M spacesavers.

Spoke with Jim Owens from Unicomp the other day.  Wanted to know if they had the parts to assemble another 84-key Model M spacesaver for me.  It turns out, they used their last available parts to make the one I now own.  So, I have the very last Model M mini ever made!   8)

Would that make it a collectible?

Who knows?  Doesn't really matter...cuz I'm never getting rid of it!

I just thought it was kinda cool, that's all.

So the key caps you got for the Model M mini - were they manufactured by Unicomp or did they actually have original IBM key caps as spare?

edit: the reason i had asked is because i was hoping to have them build me a new 139401 from spare parts just as they did for your mini :)

the nice folks at unicomp told me that they no longer have the parts needed :( they do have excellent customer service though :)

i still post a review of their customizer when i get it today :)

Oh well, it's really nice. Although the thread was almost 5.5 years ago, it's still useful for people.

I thought Webwit had the last ever SSK, or am I over thinking something?

Edit: Forget I ever said that, I just noticed when the OP posted...

I have a couple of Model Ms sitting around in parts, I was going to bolt-mod them for profit, but nobody ever seemed very interested.

I have never owned an SSK, but might like to do a chop job on a standard M to make a ghetto version.

Could have sworn that I read a wiki on that once, did it get r00tw0rm-ed last summer along with everything else?
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”
