55g Topre

I just noticed that these are finally back in stock on EK and I'm thinking about picking one up. What are your thoughts on this board?

Thats what I'm worried about. I don't want to love another rare board like my 45g... but I do. Why couldn't I have just been happy with my mx browns?

do you bottom out on it? doesn't it tire your fingers? actuation force is so high, and it gets higher as the board ages.

Everyone bottoms out on Topre...I haven't heard of anyone not bottoming out..I'm not sure it is really possible to keep that up.  The force required to press it down and lack of any resistance after that means you're going to hit bottom....

I tried a 55 and it seems a bit too stiff for me but I'm afraid that the 45 would be too soft...

The difference between 55g and 45g on a topre board is very slight.  Go for the 55g.  45g has a slight mushiness to it.  The 55g is nice and crisp.  I don't regret selling my 45g and picking up a 55g at all.

Whenever people say that, I really doubt they've spent any amount of time on a Topre keyboard...I'm not saying those same people SHOULD enjoy a Topre keyboard...or that they should even like a Topre keyboard....and certainly there are similarities with Topre and Rubber Domes...but when people make statements like that they tend to not be true...I'm not saying they're worth the crazy amounts of money but they are quite a bit different than any rubber dome keyboard..

I've tried some of those...they're not nearly as stable or as nice....Granted, that is all subjective...They're just not nearly the same quality level...This is not the same thing as saying they're not nice keyboards...

Value is all subjective...I agree, I don't think most Topre keyboards are 300+ better than some other keyboards...but they're definitely nicer.  Some people are willing to spend extra to get that quality..some aren't...

You're saying 4 out of 5 people would say WTF...I'd say much more than 80% would say WTF....But the same holds true for most mechanical keyboards...You spent over 100 on a keyboard?  WTF?  I think most people recognize a quality difference but when you're used to spending almost nothing on a keyboard, the thought of spending 100+ on one seems really odd...

Again, someone is dancing around the true question, which is, have you ever spend any extended amount of time on a topre keyboard.  I'm not out to proselytize the topre keyboard, but to equate it to a generic sub 70$ RB keyboard boggles my mind.   Can we all agree to disagree????? please?????

I agree, no one should be bad if they can't afford a Topre keyboard.  Some of these custom korean keyboards are more expensive then topres, yet should be feel bad that we all can't have them?

I guess what I'm getting at is there is this desire to equate topre switches to rubber dome, and I haven't found any RB that types near as nice.  I haven't found a mechanical that types as nice either.  But thats MY preference.  I'm not going to go around trashing MX switches because I like topres better right now.

Yes, I bottom out quite frequently on it. But that doesn't matter, as bottoming out on a Topre is a pleasant experience. And no it doesn't tire my fingers out. It's actually not all that stiff, despite what you may think. It's a much more solid feel than the 45g (although the HHKB feels much more solid than the 87U 45g).

I've been on my RealForces (between home - 55g - and the office - 45g ) for the last 6 months straight.. and now my fingers hurt whenever I use a Cherry board for any length of time. The shock of bottoming out is just too much.

Switching to the Topres was the best decision I could have made for the health of my hands. Although.. your mileage may vary.

now that's why you don't like mechanical keyboards. my mileage definitely varies -- i don't bottom out even on cherry reds. at least not hard. and if you used to bottom out on clears, you must have schwarzenegger hands squeezing rocks from time to time.

The body, yes. But I feel that the actual key stroke itself is more solid than on the 45g RF, precisely because there's no plate there to accentuate the lightness of the switch itself. Kinda counter-intuitive.

I never said I didn't like mechanical keyboards. I also never said I bottom out on clears. Yeah, I do have really big hands, but I don't type hard at all. A buckling spring board tires my hands out in a matter of minutes. On browns, I can avoid bottoming out if I concentrate, but even the rare occasions that I do, the hard impact jars my hands enough so that over time it makes them hurt.

I'm one of those who prefer the 55g. But i'm not rich enough to sell my 45g (At a loss) to buy another full priced 55g. Having two locations that require a keyboard sucks.

I probably should have stated in the begining of the thread. I have the 45g, a 45g HHKB, a silent variable, and I've used for an extended period the standard variable. Topre is awesome and I'm sold. The question isn't is Topre right for me because I've decided it is after buying cherry red, blue, brown, black and a Unicomp... no my dear board members the question is what do you think of the 55g in relation to other topre boards since I have used all of the english layout types.

Its not a question of being tired out on other boards. I don't have Mr.Burns fingers and I don't have RSI I don't mind a bit of shock on my fingers and I think the cherry boards are great. It's actually a question of finding the perfect board to match 8,000-$20,000 game development workstations. In that equation $350 really isn't a whole lot but if the diference is minor at best or most people think the 45 is better then I'm not going to mess with it. Thanks!

In that case, my personal suggestion would be the 55g. They're still way softer than a standard RD gaming board, and the feel is just oh so buttery smooth and crisp. It's not a dramatic difference from the 45g, but it's enough to make you go "ooooohhhh yeahhhhh that's the spot."

what do you all use the 55g for (gaming, just typing)? i am a programmer not a gamer so not sure whether the 55g is tiresome compared to the 45g for non-gaming.

I mainly use it for programming and gaming (mainly WoW). And I find I make more mistakes on my 45g while coding than the 55g.
