Questions concerning CC Skulls
« on: Sun, 30 December 2012, 00:49:54 »
I really want some of the CC skull key caps, but they seem to be going for outrageous prices on ebay and in the classifieds section..

I was wondering..

What websites sell them?
How often are they up for sale?
What price do they retail for?
What's the best way to find out when they are being sold?

Thanks!

Clack skulls are a much-coveted and resold item here on GH, and the subject of a lot of controversy.  They typically sell out within minutes.

> What websites sell them?

elitekeyboards.com.  ClickClack sells them directly on GH on occasion as well.  He has a vendor subforum here.

> How often are they up for sale?

Every two or three months I'd say.

> What price do they retail for?

$18 I believe.  See EK.com.

> What's the best way to find out when they are being sold?

Follow the Clack subforum and subscribe to elitekeyboard's newsletter.

And occasionally, very occasionally, someone will give one away.  I have seen that twice in the last 6 months or so.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

EK did not sell them for $18, I believe they're closer to $25-35.

Resale values tend to be much higher, $65-100 for solids. Up to $150-250+ for translucent/rarer skull combos.

I apologize for my noobiness, but is there any particular reason the clack skulls are so highly coveted?
What makes them so nice / desirable to people?

From what I've seen, the brobots don't seem to have quite the same following. Is that because the details are raised above the keyboard so much more, or do people just like skulls? :P

My future Das Ultimate S, all modded up. For now, it's a bit more black.

Pretty much their rarity and the fact that there are only a few sales per year. Also there are limitations to the quantities that people can buy from each sale, and people want more than their quota :P
Brobots are still relatively new so its hard to gauge, but there was an auction with some one off pieces and the prices went high ($100+ if I recall correctly).

Yeah Bro-Bots can go for a pretty high price too, just seems like everyone is holding on to theirs instead of selling.
Super-Heroes and Robo-Geeks would probably go for a high price as well if listed for sale.

Edit: See what CC might be offering  in his next sale here: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=37945.0

Here at GeekClack, time isn't worth anything because CCs are money.

None of it really matters, you gotta be reeeally lucky to ever get one. On EK they (now) use a drawing system that is total luck, and the last sale on GH sold out in less than 3 seconds. I have only been lucky enough to get one CC a year ago, and that was simply because the man felt sorry for me. Chin up though, you never forget your first.

I really want a CC too, and have for about 6 months. I'm not very eager though, because it seems there are 3 ways to get a CC

1) Trade something rare/unsual
2) Pay far too much money
3) Get really lucky

Unfortunately my luck always runs out :P
