A friend just dropped by ...
« on: Fri, 07 September 2007, 12:50:51 »
He asked, "So what's up with the keyboards?" He knew nothing of mechanical switches. I put him in front of a scissors style switch membrane keyboard my girlfriend uses, I said "Type." He did and said nothing, as this is something like he is used to. Then I put my Cherry with ML black switches in from of him. He typed a bit and said, "Damn!"

I let him type on that for a bit, and then I put my 21 year old Apple Desktop Bus keyboard with pink Alps sliders in front of him and let him try it. He promptly said, "Whamo!" That is his new cool slang for something that is really good, so I might be getting him into this keyboard obsession of ours as well.

It's fun to show people what a difference a good keyboard can make, isn't it?

Yes, you have to spread the word. Otherwise, all new keyboards will be like those new Apple aluminum keyboards.

Make sure to clue him in to our little corner of the world here.

Friends don't let friends type on crap. . .  ;)

Actually, I think it could be worse. In 5-7 years time Apple will be selling LCD touch-screen keyboards with 0 tactile feedback (see iPhone).

More like 5-7 MONTHS!

As long as I can still plug in a REAL keyboard with an appropriate adapter...I don't much care.

I felt the need to resurrect this thread because your prediction of 5-7 years is coming to a close.  Apple hasn't quite progressed (or should I say REgressed?) to using LCD touchscreen keyboards but the crap that they have been designing isn't too far off.  Say good-bye to touch-typing whenever that happens.  :(  I recently bought a refurbished Chromebook and the keyboard (if you can even call it that--just 1/8 inch high squares sticking out of the base) is the most hideous thing I've ever typed on.  I can't touch-type on it without making errors.

I wonder if it would recognize my Model M if it was connected using a PS/2 > USB converter...hmmmmmm.......

It'll be called the iKeyboard, and it will set all sorts of new sales records.

What do you mean? Doesn't everyone look at threads in ascending order of last updated timestamps?

Takes me ****ing forever to get to the new stuff…

You really have to show mechanical keyboards with membrane keyboards side by side otherwise they go into this stupid self denial thing.

For a second there I thought xsphat had come back.

Such necro.

Very bump.

So facepalm.

Wow!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Clearly it says black ML's.

They had different terminology back then. I really rather like ML switches.
