Filco (really Phantom) Case
« on: Wed, 02 January 2013, 15:32:30 »
Anyone know about any Filco (really for a Phantom) cases besides these?

http://deskthority.net/marketplace-f11/acrylic-case-for-filco-tenkeyless-keyboard-t1804.html

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Colorful-replace-case-Filco-and-PLU-Mechanical-Keyboard-4-colors-you-choose-/300726960317

and the MKC Aluminum case that I can't be bothered to link to.

The Acrylic one catches my eye, but at ~$150 kinda puts me off it (as does its size), while the one on ebay just isn't appealing, and the MKC one is not only closed, but it's way out of my price range (Though i'd like to get one eventually).

So anyone know of some others that are good and don't require me getting a full keyboard for the case?

Well, you can't get one of those acrylic cases directly since it was a limited edition run.  You'd have to find one in the used market.  Same with the MKC case.

The Vortex aluminum case for Filcos is available from MechanicalKeyboards, but hasn't received the best of reviews here.  Also it doesn't properly fit the Phantom, don't know if anyone has attempted a mod to it.

There are some case projects being worked on here, however nothing is ready yet.

So basically, your answer is no.

Well it's not crucial right now, since I'm not building till summer, so it might just be a good thing that those case projects are still in the works. I would rather not buy a Filco case, but that may be my only option. oh well.

That case won't work with phantom at all. Too many mods must be done that are not very easy to do. There are no standoffs, and phantom depends on standoffs to be mounted. Mounting solely depends on the two bends at the front and back of the plate, which phantom doesn't have. Lastly, even if you mounted phantom on a stock plate, there is no room for the extra space the controller needs. The vortex case can't even close properly with the ferrite bead from the Filco cable.

That's even worse than I last had read... stopped following when I saw the fairly shoddy workmanship (seams).

There should be a group buy for cases but I have a feeling they will be made of metal and somewhat expensive ($100+).

Plu ML-87 cases are Filco TKL clones and should work but aren't cheap to import.
