Cherry keyboard G80-3000

Is the Cherry G80-3000LSCEU-2 compatible with the US layout?  I have the G80-3000LSCRC-2 and I love it.  Unfortunately, one of my cats chewed through the cable.  I cannot find the RC model (english/chinese caps), only the EU model.  Are they interchangable?  Are the caps the only difference?

In terms of hardward specs, yeah they're the same. The difference is in the key caps. BUT! Some layouts require switches to have different spacing and placing to match the proper layout and keycap sizes, especially the larger keys (example: enter key). If the key layout is different then you most likely won't be able to change the big keys, though I'm sure you'll be able to change the keycaps for the "smaller" keys.

There are plenty of ppl on GeekHack who can fix your keyboard.  It'll prob cost as much as buying a new one but if you are attached to your keyboard it could be worth it.  You can easily end up spending 100 hours shopping for a new keyboard.  Or you could just get the keyboard you already know u like, fixed.

Cherry replaced US language code with EU code. Both are ANSI and only difference is they added a € legend on the keycap. Nothing important.
If only ruined that cable, just open it and replace it. It's really easy as most have just a mini connector plug like motherboard usb pin header, you don't even need to solder anything.

Does this keyboard have the Euro key or the Dollar key?

To be specific, I saw another Geekhack thread where the pic seemed to show the Dollar key.  However, the model has EU in the model number.

Both, € is extra legend on the 5 key. G80-3000L**EU:

Hmmm, (not that I care) how does a European access that Euro key?  Alt + 5?  It looks good for me so far.  Just wish I could find this keyboard for ~$60.

just replace the cable like Lysol said from some junk g81 board and it won't cost much at all. much cheaper and easier than getting another keyboard, unless u want another keyboard

How hard is it to replace the cable?  I can solder.  Is the cable something that I can purchase?  You have a link to such cables?

Open up the case on your current 3000 and see if it has a plug or not like this


older ones won't and are soldered right on. newer ones will. So figure out which you need and what color your case is and you should be able to find one in the classifieds.

It's a five-pin connector.  Is this model specific or are there universal replacements?

I think I have some extra ones, but only white color.

No, I just don't happen to have any extra myself. Someone else might around here, but since you can't make a wtb yet it might be hard to find someone to sell/trade you one. Otherwise just grab cheapest USB Cherry G81 you can find from ebay.

...slim pickings. Well here is one but it's not super cheap, but you get some spare keycaps as well so maybe not too bad.

Alternately you could get just any random usb cable and solder it on directly if you are more concerned about cost than original Cherry parts.

Yes, it may be awhile until I hit 60 posts.  I do appreciate everyone's input and your help in getting me on the right path.  If it was easy I would have found it through Google.  I remember when I stumbled upon my keyboard in the first place.  I was lucky and found it through a POS website.  Even though there are more options these days, it still seems that mechanical keyboards remain a niche instead of mainstream.  I'm using a $4 membrane keyboard in the interim.  I miss my clicky MX blues!
