Digital camera recommendations please

In the market for a digital camera. One with some nice resolution, and zoom. I'm new to cameras, and don't need anything super fancy, but nice enough that it will be both reliable, fairly easy to use, versatile, and last me at least the next 6-7 years. Interchangeable lenses would be cool, but ultimately not too necessary. Probably going to try and snag one off eBay for cheaper than list, but am shooting for $300 or less. Any photogs out there care to make any recommendations? I am currently considering the Canon Rebel.

Rebel what? Cause dont go lower than the t2i/550D.

If you want the manual options of a DSLR without the bulk, I would highly recommend the Canon S110 or one of its predecessors. Of course the camera does not have interchangeable lenses, but as a daily driver you won't really be needing specialized lenses. dpreview.com has the best in-depth reviews for cameras.

yep thats probably the best point and shoot you can get or look at a mirorless with pancake lens

Go with Cannon or Nikon. I am a Nikon fan so I choose Nikon.

Are you looking for a Point and Shoot or a DSLR?

Avoid 3rd party lenes, they are crap.

Avoid Vivtar like the plague, they break more easily than the screen on the iPhone 4S.

I, My self have a older Nikon D200 DSLR. Its about $250 to 300 used and it can used lenses from as far back as the 1970's.

I got a Nikon L120 (slightly fancier point-and-shoot) a bit over a year ago, and was sort of disappointed.  While it has a relatively long zoom, the macro capabilities are limited, likely connected to that; the lens is probably designed for distance instead.

I seemed to get better macro shots out of my old Canon A550 (7MP almost pocketable point-and-shoot.  I also found having to manually eject the flash frustrating because it ends in twenty underexposed blur pictures followed by one successful one.
