Matias quiet pro switches for Phantom?
« on: Thu, 31 January 2013, 00:48:50 »
I really want to take one of my phantoms to the office.  To do this I'm going to need quieter switches.  Every Cherry MX switch that I've tried is just too loud.  And I have cherry profile keycaps so I can't use o-rings.

Is there any way we can get some of the quiet switches that Matias developed?

If not, does anyone recommend anything that I can do to quit this thing down?

Since the Matias' switch is ALPS and the Phantom is MX the pins will not line up. Sorry to be a party pooper.

To complete the answer... the key caps aren't compatible either.

Would be nice (awesome actually) to have boards with both sets of holes.

Cherry MX and ALPS are really similar/identical in the most important respect: They are both simple contact switches.

I would personally love to have a Truly Ergonomic or WASDv2 with Matias quiet switches.

Nothing to hold our breaths for but I remember the Matias guy saying that there might be other keyboard companies interested in Matias' ALPS.

Now for the rumor mill - Diatec (Filco) is already pushing Matias in Asia... So I wouldn't be surprised to see some new Filco boards based on Matias ALPS in the future.

(I have absolutely no evidence to support it but... Mark my words.)

Just a naive idea: how difficult would it be to convert a Cherry MX keyboard to Matias ALPS?

well, all you'd  need to do is have a new PCB and plate made up to fit the case.  :)

Ugh, I didn't realize Matias ALPS are probably meant for plate mounting.

That and the leads are in different enough locations that it's really not feasible to mod an MX PCB.  The plate is a different thickness too.

Have you tried thin o-rings, like the WASD 40A-L ones? They ought to work.
