small(er) keyboard with MX clears?
« on: Tue, 19 February 2013, 08:19:16 »
I was lucky enough to come across a Cherry G80-3000 with MX clears a few months ago, which I have been using at home ever since. I'd used a G80-3000 with MX blues at home for 3-4 years previously & a Compaq MX-11800 with MX browns at work for about a year.

I would like to replace my Compaq at work with another MX clear board & am considering going for a tenkeyless or smaller board. What are my options? The KBT Race looks neat, but doesn't seem to be available with clears :( I'm an ISO user, but am open to the idea of switching to ANSI as there seems to be so much more choice of boards that way...

Small boards with ISO Layout are hard to find. Maybe you could be happy with a G80-1800? It's smaller than a 3000 but it's not tenkeyless. But very cheap and easy to mod.

You could also look into the DIY avenues of the Phantom and GH60.

This might be an obvious question, but can one actually buy a bunch of new MX clear switches to solder onto a DIY PCB like the Phantom, or do you have to find a 'donor' board to unsolder them from?

Anything smaller than fullsize is currently either custom, modded or a special limited edition. I have a TKL with clears from Keycool's Taobao store. If you want ISO, maybe check out the deskthority marketplace for modded boards?

Something like this with clears looks promising, but my Chinese isn't good enough to see whether that's actually an option on offer :(

白轴 means 'white shaft' but it's cherry clears no cherry whites :)

There are a few TG3 BL82 which feature MX Clears. They are a bit of a rarity—most are MX Blacks. The BL82 features the same form factor as the Deck 82 Ice but without the weird font and only 2KRO (which isn't a huge problem).

If this is true, then I might try to order one of those... Clears in a small keyboard but which still has arrow keys is an absolute winner for me, even if it does mean learning ANSI.

So can anybody confirm whether the Keycool 84 is actually available with clears & whether it's a decent board?
