Audio Troubles With Bootcamp
« on: Tue, 26 February 2013, 02:56:45 »
My friend just put Windows 7 on her iMac and she's not getting any sound. The computer recognizes any speakers/headphones she puts in it, and it says its receiving sound but she's not hearing anything. We were on Skype and I could hear her, so her mic is working just fine. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? She's already tried updating drivers.

This also only happens when she's on Windows. When she switches back to OS X she has her sound back.

Did she install the Boot Camp drivers (Windows support software from Apple) after installing Windows 7?

Yes. She's updated all the drivers.

In Windows, go to the Sound control panel and go to the Playback tab.

Check which devices are listed as "Ready".

Right-click each item and click Test.

When you find the device that outputs audio, right-click it and click Set as Default Device.

If none of the devices output audio on the iMac, there may be a problem with the Windows drivers installed.  Let me know which iMac model (i.e. screen size and year model) it is and I'll see what drivers your friend should install. :D

She's already updated practically every driver available. She's tested multiple output sources and the computer shows them as putting out audio but she's not getting any feedback.

It's a 24", she doesn't know the year but she knows the model isn't available any more. I know she's had it for at least three years, so it can't be younger than 2010.

worst case scenario get a 15 dollar USB external audio output and just run off that.

EDIT: I had an issue where a client was using a 3rd party audio software and couldn't hear audio. Turns out he was outputting as 5.1 and it was "playing" on the speakers that weren't connected. I don't know how the apple software works but if she's using a stereo headset or speakers then that might be it. Try setting any instance of 5.1 audio to stereo.

FYI this was on a creative sound card in the options.

One of my buddies said that he had sound issues with a 24-inch iMac on Win XP in the past and was able to resolve it using these drivers:

Please try it out and let me know how it goes.
