Hellogoodbye GH :[ Until next time!
« on: Wed, 27 February 2013, 18:36:28 »
I wanted to wait until I was a regular user of a mechanical keyboard before introducing myself, but things have gotten complicated.

Anyway, you can call me Last. I'm a college student, getting my second undergraduate degree in Computer Science. My first degree was Philosophy. Currently I'm learning C++ and I love the crap out of it. Correction: I love the crap out of programming in general. I also do graphic design and some web development. I work as a tech assistant at the my main university's library, and I may become full time in the summer while at the same time becoming a part-time student.

I discovered mechanical keyboards when my friend showed me his Razer BWU about a year ago, and I loved it (yes I know some of you are making faces now, but to somebody who has never touched a mechanical before, it was really nice at the time). Even though I'm 23 years old my father wanted to buy me a Christmas present and so we ordered a KBT Race with MX Blues together. We thought it was natural since I am now going to be a programmer. The keyboard came in last month, but unfortunately it was too loud for my girlfriend (and I am a heavy typist so bottoming out is very natural for me - and the click was loud enough so o-rings/landing pads was not a viable option) so we returned it in hopes of something quieter.

I am living with my girlfriend, but unfortunately I can only afford to pay 1/3 of the rent since I am a full-time student and only part-time worker. Since returning the KBT Race, we have had multiple arguments about whether I should buy a keyboard. I understand that we are a pretty poor couple, and I have had the tendency to think of this money as "gift money" or extra allowance that I can use for myself. Her argument is that we cannot afford to have any extra allowance, and it took me a while to accept that she is right.  I have just finished talking with her now, and we have come to the conclusion that I must cancel my order of the last Poker MX Black from mechanicalkeyboards.com. I am supposing it is easier to let go of this hobby before I get too attached to it, so I might as well give it up for the time being to save my relationship with my girlfriend. She means so much to me and we are planning on getting married this year. I cannot risk our well-being for my own personal hobby. I don't want to feel guilty every time I sit at our desk and start typing.

I am sure some of you feel my pain here. It was the last new poker! I don't have any desire for anything wireless or backlit like the Poker 2/Pro, I just wanted a cheap, dependable, customize-able 60% keyboard. I have barely even had the chance to type a couple sentences on the KBT Race when I had it, but at least I enjoyed it while it lasted. I was even going to order some white blank PBTs from takaki which appear to be the lowest price ever on white blanks (without a reputation for imperfections), so it hurts even more. :[

Anyway I have had a great time here at GH. I wanted to at least give a formal introduction before leaving. Rest assured I will come back when I have a full-time job (Maybe I can make up for it and buy a KMAC later! - lol and be the first person to have a KMAC as their first daily driver). Thank you everyone for making a geek feel at home. It really does mean a lot to me. I know most of you don't know me, but I lurk so much that I feel like I know a lot of you guys (I hope that doesn't sound too creepy lol). I love your humor and I love the atmosphere here. I am so glad that I am not insane (or at least alone) in my obsession with mechanical keyboards.  I will miss all of you. Keep on Geekhacking!

Until next time,
Last

P.S.
I will still be posting a video review and a write-up when I get the Ultimate Switch Tester in the mail. ^^

I am very proud of your decision, something I overlooked when I was younger, I am glad you made the right decision because I live with my mistake everyday

if you want I have a spare Filco MX brown board I can give to you as a gift the only thing is that the case is not original it's a clear acrylic case and on the bottom right hand side does not close completely, I will even provide you with some keycaps to use it's not much but if you want it's here for you

Wow tsangan, that is a very generous gesture. My first instinct of course would be to accept right away, I mean how could I turn down a keyboard from Tsangan?! You have a freaking keycap formation named after you!

But really I think I shouldn't have a keyboard, because I am only going to want more. I know myself, and it would probably get to the point of secretly purchasing stuff >_<. I really don't mean to insult you! I'm thankful that you made an offer, and to a no-known newbie no less. I'm just not in a good position to lust over a hobby right now. It's just that I have a seriously obsessive nature, and I know how that will end. Thank you so much though!

I know what you mean I have a bad tendency of secretly purchasing too and for you to stop yourself way before it gets to point to tempt you is really good control of you, sorry to have tempted you.

If you ever need anything feel free to PM me, best of luck to the relationship, school and work. Geekhack will be here waiting for you.

are you a bad enough dude to help us make something cool? (though note you'll have to become adept with pygtk and C99 very quickly)

to all the brilliant friends who have left us, and all the students who climb on their shoulders.

Sorry, most of my time is consumed by either work or classes right now. Calculus and C++ are two languages on their own, and I am taking two other classes in addition. Lol, don't worry I will be a lot more helpful to GH when I come back as a programmer with a degree!

Edit: Graduation is scheduled for December 2014, if you are wondering lol.
