Suggestions for new Speaker System
« on: Mon, 11 March 2013, 22:14:31 »
Hey everyone, my old BostonAcoustic speakers just broke down, and it is time for an upgrade!

If you could, please post here with a link to a set of speakers, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I really don't want to spend too much, but maybe up to $200 or so..

I also would like it to have excellent bass, as far as everything else, I don't know much about sound systems so just let me know what you think of your system and why it is good!

Thanks everyone!

If you simply blew the speaker it could be a simple and cheap fix. Open up the speaker enclosure an have a look at it. If not sure what you are looking at post a picture.
Otherwise I am not familiar with PC speaker options, especially not at that low end of the budget to help with that. For that cheap I would reccomend checking used/thrift shops for any hi fi gear that appears to be in decent shape.

Pictures would be great, but you could be lucky and have just destroyed the rubber surround that keeps everything that moves in check.  Those are typically easy to replace yourself.

Or do like doubleivan said and sink slowly into hi-fi as a hobby.

No the inside! The speaker itself not the enclosure. We need to see if it is clearly blown and what is the size and etc to give repair advice. I searched but could not find any of that info.

Hmmm.. see I knew this was the wrong picture again. But I can't open it up for some reason, the screws won't come out? Let me try again in a sec.

Sorry guys haha

There are a lot of options out there, it really depends on what your intended use is for the speakers.  Listening to music? Making music? Movies? Gaming?

I would say spend that $200 on some stellar headphones.

There have been a couple UE triple fi's floating in the past week or so that would rock the chain, if in-ear isn't your thing, there's a good amount of over-the-ear goodness that will get all the everything everytime.

My favorites at this price-ish:
http://ue.logitech.com/en-us/headphones/ue6000
http://us.akg.com/akg-product-detail-us/k-490-nc.html
http://www.focal.com/en/mobile-headphones/298-spirit-one-3544051725002.html

Or if they are your thing, you could go all-in with something like what I did, a custom set from Ultimate Ears  or JHAudio - http://www.jhaudio.com/product/jh5-pro-custom-ear-monitor(what I have, specifically).  Entry level is more than enough for most of today's recorded and compressed music.  They're more money, but well worth it in my opinion as they'll never fall out and provide quiet room levels of sound cancellation.

If $200 is your budget and $250 is super pushing it, over-the-ear will provide better bang for your buck.

If you like Bose see if you can find companion 3 series ... they usually go for under $200. I have those and companion 5 (which retail for $350ish) and I personally love them.
