KeyboardPi Mod
« on: Sun, 17 March 2013, 17:41:50 »
Good evening fellow GHackians,

A few weeks ago I found out about the Raspberry Pi, I was interested in it as it was something new and shiny and I was very tempted to purchase one even though I had no idea what I would do with it (Hey its only £30 right!)

I was reading my girlfriend's dad's copy of CustomPC and they had an article about the Pi which has relit my interest in the product and I have spent the past couple of hours wondering again, "what would I do with it?" (Hey it's only £30 right!) So I was searching the good old internet and when I got bored I booted up the old emulator and carried on with reliving my childhood playing some Pokemon Red...

Then it hit me...

"If I could find a suitable sized keyboard, would it be possible to fit the RPi into the case and have a purpose built emulator machine?!"

As it is my little cousin's birthday soon, I have decided that instead of getting him yet another Call of Duty remake, I could create him something that he has never seen, that I know he will appreciate and something that would provide hours of entertainment playing games that will teach him how much better games were "back in my day" (+ sort of selfishly, I would be able to enjoy it when I go visiting too!)

So... My questions to the people that have the knowledge to get the ball rolling... (You may have figured it out by now)

Do you know any suitable keyboards that would:
- Accommodate the RPi
- Allow for the fitting of a USB board to give more ports
- Look reasonably retro
- Be of a sensible price and quality

Any help will be uber-welcome as I am only able to find ones that other people have created and frankly, they mostly use keyboards that are a little bit expensive for the project I am trying to create.

Finally, if I do get this project off the ground, there will definitely be a blog/log on here for you guys to check out!

Check this out: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41198.msg822671#msg822671

Also, you could get a 122-key Model M from Unicomp and stick the RPi in there. There should be plenty of room.

Thanks for the link JD, just had a quick flick through it and I have to admit I got a few nerd chills after reading the RPi can fit in all of those iconic units and it got me excited because it might cause me to buy more than 1 RPi!

Correct me if I am wrong but you are carrying out a similar task? If so, could you link me?

Mine will be the one in the TI-99/4A. When I start the build, I'll post a build log here, and post a link to it in this thread.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing how you get on!

In the meantime, I will hit up eBay and see what bargains I can pick up, it's almost carbooting season so I might actually take a walk around and see what I can find!
