Hi,

I received my second M knowing that its 5-pin din connector was shot (looks like a dog has been at it).

Rather than fork out the monies for a new cable can I solder on a PS/2 or do I have to stick to the DIN with a ps/2 converter?

Assuming the five pins map perfectly well to the 6 with some knowhow.

AT to PS/2 is passive, so yes you can just solder on a PS/2 plug with "some knowhow".

If you fail you can always pay for a new SDL cable. The $30 SDL to USB cables from orihalcon are well worth the money. Even his $20 SDL to PS/2 cables are worth it.
