Should i replace mx browns with reds?
« on: Sat, 23 March 2013, 22:06:09 »
Hey,

Can someone please try to describe me the feel of mx reds? I was thinking abour replacing browns with reds, since i bought it yesterday and have 30 day to replace it. What i'm wondering is, do reds feel same as browns without tactile bump? Is it same force and same sound? is the difference between linear switch and tactile switch is only the bump? :) Cause believe it or not, browns feel a bit stiff and i'm wondering if they are going to be a bit lighter once i break them in...

Linears feel more... linear. Press the keys on your board very carefully. On the middle of the travel,
you feel a sudden rise of force needed, and afterwards the pressure required drops. Reds dont have that sudden rise, so the force reuired to press the key grows steadily, in a very smooth manner. So,
reds are only slighty lighter than browns, but much smoother. Look at some Cherry mx force graphs.

Browns and reds are as light as you can get with cherry mx (theres also 35g Topre keyboards). Id say use the browns for a full week and if you still arent satisfied, try reds. A lot of people think that browns are juat dirty reds, so dont be afraid to try more switches.

On my phone so sorry for typpes and/or lack of ponctuation.

Ever typed on browns for a while and the bump seems less pronounced?  That is kinda what it feels like.
It is lighter you just dont get a bump to tell you when to stop pressing.
After typing on reds for a while browns may feel slightly stiffer at start. Kinda like how blues are a little heavier.

You can buy cus tom springs at the originitive store.

Honestly the best thing to do is buy a second keyboard with MX reds.  You will appreciate and enjoy both keyboards more if you have them both at the same time to compare.  This might seem incredibly extravagant to you at this point, but someday you will look back at this choice and realize I am giving you the best advice.  Now if you are having a major cash flow problem, then the dual keyboard option is not doable right now.  In such case I would tell you to keep the keyboard with MX Browns, and use it for a while.  You have only owned it for one day, you really need to use it for more than that just to know if you like it or not.  At a later date, when you can afford it, buy a keyboard with MX reds.  Then you will have a mighty keyboard collection.  Mighty?  Yes, a keyboard collection that comprises a brown and a red is actually a mighty collection of keyboards indeed.  If you add a keyboard with MX Blues, you will have, in terms of keyboard experience, a collection that matches up with the greatest collections you will see on this forum.  If you then add a Topre board to your collection, you will be as knowledgeable about keyboards as any expert here.  And you can start giving out advice like this.

I have the same keyboard with browns and reds; the feel is actually pretty similar.  The browns give a little bit more feedback when touch typing but not that much.  I do find browns a bit distracting when gaming which is what the red board is for.  If you find browns a bit rough and would like a smoother feel then reds might be what you are after.  But I don't notice a big stiffness between the two, perhaps the slight bump in browns could be interpreted as stiffness.

From what little I've tried blues I actually prefer those for touch typing (don't bottom out the keys as much) but my PC is very close to the living room and they are too loud to use.

I think you should give a try to a sampler set some keyboard provider sells for around $8 plus S&H, this set includes a sample of each switch so you can actually feel the differences. It will not be as to have a full keyboard with the switches but it is better than leaning on others experiences. There is a link bellow, but I should say that the other stuff in the kit will not worth much, but well, who does not have leftovers when purchasing mechanical keyboard stuff?

It's not bad to own both a board with Browns and Reds.  You might want to switch it up once in a while <-- DID YOU SEE WHAT I DID RIGHT THERE! :D

Why do browns get hate? I do not understand at all. Reds are by far my least favorite switch to type on. For gaming, I still prefer browns over reds.

Same here. Reds are too light for being a linear switch. Browns are the perfect, all-around switches. I think browns get a lot of hate because they're a 'no frills' switch and they're common. It's funny how everyone has only nice things to say about unordinary switches such as clears.

I also love browns, but I haven't tried reds yet so I can't say. But from all the youtube videos, reds seem very fun.

Same here. I can see the appeal of reds and do like how they feel. But in both typing and gaming, I like the slight tactile feedback of the browns. It feels better to me, and I do not have as many accidental keystrokes which was always a problem for me on the reds. The browns are light too, but the feedback just makes them easier to use for some reason.

I don't like browns because I don't notice the tactile enough for it to be there really, it just feels like a rougher red when typing at any kind of speed. If I want something that have tactility I go for click type. I never have any problem with accidental press on red. I could stand them to be even lighter probably. In fact I have been curious to try out some of those 52g springs.

Browns do break in really nicely. Unless you type accurately already, you're probably not going to like the reds that much since they're so light.

Anyways, I believe that people get used to typing on whatever switch they have if they keep at it for at least two months. When they get bored, they inevitably buy a new switch to experience that same learning curve. But like any drug, the second time isn't as magical.

Wait, I'm talking about keyboards right? Yea.
